耶和華對撒母耳說：“你為掃羅悲哀要到幾時呢？我已經棄絕他作以色列的王了。你把膏油盛滿了角，然後去吧！我要差派你到伯利恆人耶西那裡去，因為我在他的眾子中，已經預定了一個為我作王。”

那時，你在異象中告訴你的聖民說：“我幫助了一位勇士，我從民中興起了一位青年（“我從民中興起了一位青年”或譯：“我興起那從民中所揀選的”）。我找到我的僕人大衛，用我的聖膏油膏他。

你要請耶西參加獻祭的筵席，我就會指示你當作的。我指示你的那人，你要為我膏立他。”

耶西就派人去把大衛帶回來。他面色紅潤，眼目清秀，外貌英俊。耶和華說：“就是這一個，你起來膏立他吧！”撒母耳就拿起盛油的角，在他的兄長中膏立他。從那天起，耶和華的靈就大大感動大衛。後來撒母耳動身往拉瑪去了。

以色列眾支派都到希伯崙來見大衛，說：“看哪！我們都是你的骨肉至親。從前掃羅作我們的王的時候，領導以色列人行動的是你。耶和華也曾對你說：‘你要牧養我的子民以色列，要作以色列的領袖。’”以色列的眾長老都到希伯崙來見王。大衛王在希伯崙耶和華面前與他們立約，他們就膏立大衛作以色列的王。

沒有求問耶和華，所以耶和華把他殺死了，把國位轉給耶西的兒子大衛。那時，以色列眾人聚集到希伯崙去見大衛，說：“看哪，我們原是你的骨肉。從前掃羅作王的時候，是你率領以色列人出入征戰；耶和華你的神曾對你說過：‘你要牧養我的人民以色列，你要作我的人民以色列的領袖。’”於是以色列的眾長老都來到希伯崙見大衛王，大衛就在希伯崙，在耶和華面前與他們立約，他們就按照耶和華藉著撒母耳所說的話，膏立大衛作王治理以色列。

現在可以實現了！因為耶和華曾經論到大衛說：‘我要藉著我的僕人大衛的手，把我的子民以色列從非利士人和他們所有敵人的手中拯救出來。’”
