Just as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.

When He entered the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said,“ By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?”But Jesus responded and said to them,“ I will also ask you one question, which, if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John was from what source: from heaven or from men?” And they began considering the implications among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say to us,‘ Then why did you not believe him?’But if we say,‘ From men,’ we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet.”And answering Jesus, they said,“ We do not know.” He also said to them,“ Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.“ But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said,‘ Son, go work today in the vineyard.’But he replied,‘ I do not want to.’ Yet afterward he regretted it and went. And the man came to his second son and said the same thing; and he replied,‘ I will, sir’; and yet he did not go.Which of the two did the will of his father?” They* said,“ The first.” Jesus* said to them,“ Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you.For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even have second thoughts afterward so as to believe him.“ Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and he leased it to vine growers and went on a journey. And when the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine growers to receive his fruit. And the vine growers took his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they did the same things to them. But afterward he sent his son to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But when the vine growers saw the son, they said among themselves,‘ This is the heir; come, let’s kill him and take possession of his inheritance!’And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine growers?”They* said to Him,“ He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other vine growers, who will pay him the fruit in the proper seasons.”Jesus* said to them,“ Did you never read in the Scriptures,‘ A stone which the builders rejected, This has become the chief cornerstone; This came about from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes’?Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruit. And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”

  • Isaiah 28:24-29
Does the farmer plow continually to plant seed? Does he continually turn and break up his ground?Does he not level its surface And sow dill and scatter cumin And plant wheat in rows, Barley in its place and rye within its area? For his God instructs and teaches him properly. For dill is not threshed with a threshing sledge, Nor is the cartwheel driven over cumin; But dill is beaten out with a rod, and cumin with a club.Grain for bread is crushed, Indeed, he does not continue to thresh it forever. Because the wheel of his cart and his horses eventually damage it, He does not thresh it longer. This also comes from the Lord of armies, Who has made His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great.

The weeds are the people of the evil one,and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.“ As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.“ Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad?Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be destroyed; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled.I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.”The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard cries of distress. (niv)

“ For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.“ About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them,‘ You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’So they went.“ He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them,‘ Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’“‘ Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.“ He said to them,‘ You also go and work in my vineyard.’“ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman,‘ Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’“ The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.‘ These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said,‘ and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’“ But he answered one of them,‘ I am not being unfair to you, friend. • Matthew 13:18-30
“ Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”Jesus told them another parable:“ The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.“ The owner’s servants came to him and said,‘ Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’“‘ An enemy did this,’ he replied.“ The servants asked him,‘ Do you want us to go and pull them up?’“‘ No,’ he answered,‘ because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’” (niv)
