我復將新誡致書以傳爾、在主乃真、在爾亦真、蓋晦暗方過、而真光已照也、

雖然、吾所書者、亦可謂之新誡命、主所體認、亦爾等所體認者也。蓋暗昧寖消、而真光已著矣。

Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

那照亮世人的真光來到了世上。

我賜給你們一條新命令——你們要彼此相愛。我怎樣愛你們，你們也要怎樣彼此相愛。

那些不信的人是被這世界的神弄瞎了心眼，以致看不見基督榮耀的福音之光。基督是上帝的本像。我們並非傳揚自己，而是傳揚耶穌基督是主，並且為耶穌的緣故而作你們的奴僕。因為那吩咐光從黑暗中照射出來的上帝光照了我們的心，為要讓我們認識上帝在耶穌基督的面容上所彰顯的榮耀。

但必有公義的太陽為你們這些敬畏我名的人升起，它的光芒有醫治的能力。你們必像欄中出來的牛犢一樣歡欣跳躍。

愛上帝的人也應該愛弟兄姊妹，這是上帝給我們的命令。

親愛的弟兄姊妹，上帝既然這樣愛我們，我們也應該彼此相愛。

我們因愛弟兄姊妹，便知道自己已經出死入生了。不愛弟兄姊妹的，仍然陷在死亡中。恨弟兄姊妹的就是殺人的，你們知道殺人的沒有永生。主耶穌為我們捨命，我們由此便知道什麼是愛，我們也應當為弟兄姊妹捨命。

你看！冬天過去了，雨水止住了。大地百花盛開，百鳥爭鳴的季節已經來臨，田野也傳來斑鳩的叫聲。

你們要彼此相愛，像我愛你們一樣，這就是我的命令。為朋友捨命可以說是人間最偉大的愛了。你們如果照我的吩咐去做，就是我的朋友。我不再稱你們為奴僕，因為奴僕不知道主人的事。我稱你們為朋友，因為我把從父那裡聽見的一切都告訴了你們。

走在黑暗中的人必看見大光，活在死亡陰影下的人必被光照亮。

耶穌對他們說：「光在你們中間照耀的時候不多了，你們要趁著有光的時候走路，免得黑暗來臨後，走在黑暗裡的人不知道要往哪裡去。

你們藉著基督信了使祂從死裡復活、賜祂榮耀的上帝，所以，你們的信心和盼望都在於上帝。
