The king of Assyria deported Israel to Assyria and settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in towns of the Medes.

The king of Assyria took the people of Israel away from their own land. He sent them off to Assyria. He made some of them live in Halah. He made others live in Gozan on the Habor River. And he made others live in the towns of the Medes.

So the God of Israel stirred up King Pul of Assyria( that is, King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria), and he carried away the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh and took them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan, where they remain to this very day.

Were the nations whom my predecessors destroyed– the nations of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden in Telassar– rescued by their gods?

In the ninth year of Hoshea’s reign, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the people of Israel to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, along the Habor( the river of Gozan), and in the cities of the Medes.

But you took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of the god Rephan, the images you made to worship, but I will deport you beyond Babylon.’

All the people were aware of it, the people of Ephraim and those living in Samaria. Yet with pride and an arrogant attitude, they said,“ The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with chiseled stone; the sycamore fig trees have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.”Then the LORD provoked their adversaries to attack them, he stirred up their enemies–Syria from the east, and the Philistines from the west, they gobbled up Israelite territory. Despite all this, his anger does not subside, and his hand is ready to strike again.The people did not return to the one who struck them, they did not seek reconciliation with the LORD who commands armies.So the LORD cut off Israel’s head and tail, both the shoots and stalk in one day.The leaders and the highly respected people are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail.The leaders of this nation were misleading people, and the people being led were destroyed.So the sovereign master was not pleased with their young men, he took no pity on their orphans and widows; for the whole nation was godless and did wicked things, every mouth was speaking disgraceful words. Despite all this, his anger does not subside, and his hand is ready to strike again.For evil burned like a fire, it consumed thorns and briers; it burned up the thickets of the forest, and they went up in smoke.Because of the anger of the LORD who commands armies, the land was scorched, and the people became fuel for the fire. People had no compassion on one another.They devoured on the right, but were still hungry, they ate on the left, but were not satisfied. People even ate the flesh of their own arm!Manasseh fought against Ephraim, and Ephraim against Manasseh; together they fought against Judah. Despite all this, his anger does not subside, and his hand is ready to strike again.

Seek the LORD so you can live! Otherwise he will break out like fire against Joseph’s family; the fire will consume and no one will be able to quench it and save Bethel.

Assyria, the club I use to vent my anger, is as good as dead, a cudgel with which I angrily punish.

for before the child knows how to cry out,‘ My father’ or‘ My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.”

For Syria’s leader is Damascus, and the leader of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will no longer exist as a nation.

Certainly you have heard how the kings of Assyria have annihilated all lands. Do you really think you will be rescued?

They will not remain in the LORD’s land. Ephraim will return to Egypt; they will eat ritually unclean food in Assyria.

You did not bring me sacrifices and grain offerings during the forty years you spent in the wilderness, family of Israel.You will pick up your images of Sikkuth, your king, and Kiyyun, your star god, which you made for yourselves,and I will drive you into exile beyond Damascus,” says the Lord. He is called the God who commands armies!

As I have done to Samaria and its idols, so I will do to Jerusalem and its idols.”

Israel will be swallowed up among the nations; they will be like a worthless piece of pottery.They have gone up to Assyria, like a wild donkey that wanders off. Ephraim has hired prostitutes as lovers.

Listen to this funeral song I am ready to sing about you, family of Israel:“ The virgin Israel has fallen down and will not get up again. She is abandoned on her own land with no one to help her get up.”The sovereign LORD says this:“ The city that marches out with a thousand soldiers will have only a hundred left; the town that marches out with a hundred soldiers will have only ten left for the family of Israel.”
