Now a man from the sons of the prophets said to another by the word of the Lord,“ Please strike me.” But the man refused to strike him.Then he said to him,“ Because you have not listened to the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as you leave me, a lion will kill you.” And as soon as he left him a lion found him and killed him.Then he found another man and said,“ Please strike me.” And the man struck him, injuring him.So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the road, and disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes.And as the king passed by, he cried out to the king and said,“ Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and behold, a man turned aside and brought a man to me and said,‘ Guard this man; if for any reason he goes missing, then your life shall be forfeited in place of his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’Now while your servant was busy here and there, he disappeared.” And the king of Israel said to him,“ So shall your judgment be; you yourself determined it.”Then he quickly took the bandage away from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him, that he was one of the prophets.

Because of the wrongful act of his unjust gain I was angry and struck him; I hid My face and was angry, And he went on turning away, in the way of his heart.I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and to his mourners,

And He said,“ A man had two sons.The younger of them said to his father,‘ Father, give me the share of the estate that is coming to me.’ And so he divided his wealth between them.And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey to a distant country, and there he squandered his estate in wild living.Now when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began doing without.So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs.And he longed to have his fill of the carob pods that the pigs were eating, and no one was giving him anything.But when he came to his senses, he said,‘ How many of my father’s hired laborers have more than enough bread, but I am dying here from hunger!I will set out and go to my father, and will say to him,“ Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight;I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired laborers.” ’So he set out and came to his father. But when he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.And the son said to him,‘ Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’But the father said to his slaves,‘ Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet;and bring the fattened calf, slaughter it, and let’s eat and celebrate;for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.“ Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things could be.And he said to him,‘ Your brother has come, and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.’But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him.But he answered and said to his father,‘ Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never neglected a command of yours; and yet you never gave me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends;but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your wealth with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.’And he said to him,‘ Son, you have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours.But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.’ ”

When David got up in the morning, the word of the Lord came to Gad the prophet, David’s seer, saying,“ Go and speak to David,‘ This is what the Lord says:“ I am imposing upon you three choices; choose for yourself one of them, and I will do it to you.” ’ ”So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him,“ Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee for three months before your enemies while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ of plague in your land? Now consider and see what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.”

And the king said to her,“ What is troubling you?” And she answered,“ Truly I am a widow, for my husband is dead.And your servant had two sons, but the two of them fought in the field, and there was no one to save them from each other, so one struck the other and killed him.Now behold, the entire family has risen against your servant, and they have said,‘ Hand over the one who struck his brother, so that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed, and eliminate the heir as well.’ So they will extinguish my coal which is left, so as to leave my husband neither name nor remnant on the face of the earth.”Then the king said to the woman,“ Go to your home, and I will issue orders concerning you.”The woman of Tekoa said to the king,“ My lord, the king, the guilt is on me and my father’s house, but the king and his throne are guiltless.”So the king said,“ Whoever speaks to you, bring him to me, and he will not touch you anymore.”Then she said,“ May the king please remember the Lord your God, so that the avenger of blood will not continue to destroy, otherwise they will destroy my son.” And he said,“ As the Lord lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground.”

Then David said to the messenger,“ This is what you shall say to Joab:‘ Do not let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another; fight with determination against the city and overthrow it’; and thereby encourage him.”

Now behold, a man of God came from Judah to Bethel by the word of the Lord, while Jeroboam was standing at the altar to burn incense.

For we will surely die and are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up. Yet God does not take away life, but makes plans so that the banished one will not be cast out from Him.

Now when they informed David, saying,“ Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah,“ Did you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?”And Uriah said to David,“ The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in temporary shelters, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Should I then go to my house to eat and drink and to sleep with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I will not do this thing.”Then David said to Uriah,“ Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you go back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the day after.Now David summoned Uriah, and he ate and drank in his presence, and he made Uriah drunk; and in the evening Uriah went out to lie on his bed with his lord’s servants, and he still did not go down to his house.So in the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.He had written in the letter the following:“ Station Uriah on the front line of the fiercest battle and pull back from him, so that he may be struck and killed.”So it was as Joab kept watch on the city, that he stationed Uriah at the place where he knew there were valiant men.And the men of the city went out and fought against Joab, and some of the people among David’s servants fell; and Uriah the Hittite also died.

“ Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and he leased it to vine growers and went on a journey.And when the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine growers to receive his fruit.And the vine growers took his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they did the same things to them.But afterward he sent his son to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But when the vine growers saw the son, they said among themselves,‘ This is the heir; come, let’s kill him and take possession of his inheritance!’And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine growers?”They* said to Him,“ He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other vine growers, who will pay him the fruit in the proper seasons.”Jesus* said to them,“ Did you never read in the Scriptures,‘ A stone which the builders rejected, This has become the chief cornerstone; This came about from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes’?Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruit.And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them.

Now it happened after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying,“ Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will provide rain on the face of the earth.”

Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithfulness; According to the greatness of Your compassion, wipe out my wrongdoings.Wash me thoroughly from my guilt And cleanse me from my sin.For I know my wrongdoings, And my sin is constantly before me.Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.Behold, I was brought forth in guilt, And in sin my mother conceived me.Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in secret You will make wisdom known to me.Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; Cleanse me, and I will be whiter than snow.Let me hear joy and gladness, Let the bones You have broken rejoice.Hide Your face from my sins And wipe out all my guilty deeds.Create in me a clean heart, God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And sustain me with a willing spirit.Then I will teach wrongdoers Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.Lord, open my lips, So that my mouth may declare Your praise.For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You do not take pleasure in burnt offering.The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, God, You will not despise.By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then bulls will be offered on Your altar.

But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite,“ Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say to them,‘ Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal zebub, the god of Ekron?’

Now it came about, when the king lived in his house, and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,that the king said to Nathan the prophet,“ See now, I live in a house of cedar, but the ark of God remains within the tent.”Nathan said to the king,“ Go, do all that is in your mind, for the Lord is with you.”But in the same night, the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying,“ Go and say to My servant David,‘ This is what the Lord says:“ Should you build Me a house for My dwelling?

Let me sing now for my beloved A song of my beloved about His vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard on a fertile hill.He dug it all around, cleared it of stones, And planted it with the choicest vine. And He built a tower in the middle of it, And also carved out a wine vat in it; Then He expected it to produce good grapes, But it produced only worthless ones.“ And now, you inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, Judge between Me and My vineyard.What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected it to produce good grapes did it produce worthless ones?So now let Me tell you what I am going to do to My vineyard: I will remove its hedge and it will be consumed; I will break down its wall and it will become trampled ground.I will lay it waste; It will not be pruned nor hoed, But briars and thorns will come up. I will also command the clouds not to rain on it.”For the vineyard of the Lord of armies is the house of Israel, And the people of Judah are His delightful plant. So He waited for justice, but behold, there was bloodshed; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and raised his voice and called out. And he said to them,“ Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, that God may listen to you.Once the trees went to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree,‘ Reign over us!’But the olive tree said to them,‘ Shall I give up my fatness with which God and mankind are honored, and go to wave over the trees?’Then the trees said to the fig tree,‘ You, come, reign over us!’But the fig tree said to them,‘ Shall I give up my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to wave over the trees?’Then the trees said to the vine,‘ You, come, reign over us!’But the vine said to them,‘ Shall I give up my new wine, which cheers God and mankind, and go to wave over the trees?’Then all the trees said to the bramble,‘ You, come, reign over us!’And the bramble said to the trees,‘ If you really are anointing me as king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, may fire come out of the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’

In accordance with all these words and all of this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

“ Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, enjoying himself in splendor every day.And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,and longing to be fed from the scraps which fell from the rich man’s table; not only that, the dogs also were coming and licking his sores.Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s arms; and the rich man also died and was buried.And in Hades he raised his eyes, being in torment, and* saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his arms.And he cried out and said,‘ Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’But Abraham said,‘ Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set, so that those who want to go over from here to you will not be able, nor will any people cross over from there to us.’And he said,‘ Then I request of you, father, that you send him to my father’s house—for I have five brothers— in order that he may warn them, so that they will not come to this place of torment as well.’But Abraham* said,‘ They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’But he said,‘ No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’But he said to him,‘ If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
