Come now, make a covenant with us.”’Here is our bread. It was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey on the day we set out to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and crumbly.These wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they have burst. And these garments and sandals of ours are worn out from the very long journey.”So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the Lord.And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them.At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors and that they lived among them.And the people of Israel set out and reached their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.But the people of Israel did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. Then all the congregation murmured against the leaders.But all the leaders said to all the congregation,“ We have sworn to them by the Lord, the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them.This we will do to them: let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath that we swore to them.”And the leaders said to them,“ Let them live.” So they became cutters of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, just as the leaders had said of them.

They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them.

They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

And he said,“ Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord.” So he had him ride in his chariot.

And you shall consume all the peoples that the Lord your God will give over to you. Your eye shall not pity them, neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.

And Saul said,“ God do so to me and more also; you shall surely die, Jonathan.”

And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said,“ Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”But he turned and rebuked them.

And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword.But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.

But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin.

For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
