Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon— an evil spirit— cried out, shouting,“ Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God!”But Jesus reprimanded him.“ Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.Amazed, the people exclaimed,“ What authority and power this man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!”

But Jesus replied,“ We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.”So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.

As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a violent convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy. Then he gave him back to his father.

At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.Then he told John’s disciples,“ Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard— the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”And he added,“ God blesses those who do not fall away because of me.”

Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

But Jesus knew what they were planning. So he left that area, and many people followed him. He healed all the sick among them,

They took copies of the Book of the Law of the Lord and traveled around through all the towns of Judah, teaching the people.

The people recognized Jesus at once,and they ran throughout the whole area, carrying sick people on mats to wherever they heard he was.Wherever he went— in villages, cities, or the countryside— they brought the sick out to the marketplaces. They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.

“ Good answer!” he said.“ Now go home, for the demon has left your daughter.”And when she arrived home, she found her little girl lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone.

Because God’s children are human beings— made of flesh and blood— the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

Jesus went out to the lake with his disciples, and a large crowd followed him. They came from all over Galilee, Judea,Jerusalem, Idumea, from east of the Jordan River, and even from as far north as Tyre and Sidon. The news about his miracles had spread far and wide, and vast numbers of people came to see him.Jesus instructed his disciples to have a boat ready so the crowd would not crush him.He had healed many people that day, so all the sick people eagerly pushed forward to touch him.And whenever those possessed by evil spirits caught sight of him, the spirits would throw them to the ground in front of him shrieking,“ You are the Son of God!”

Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon.A Gentile woman who lived there came to him, pleading,“ Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away.“ Tell her to go away,” they said.“ She is bothering us with all her begging.”Then Jesus said to the woman,“ I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep— the people of Israel.”But she came and worshiped him, pleading again,“ Lord, help me!”Jesus responded,“ It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”She replied,“ That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”“ Dear woman,” Jesus said to her,“ your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down.A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all.The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel.

For the Lord declares,“ I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.”

So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened.A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.

And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed.Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion.“ Don’t cry!” he said.Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped.“ Young man,” he said,“ I tell you, get up.”Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying,“ A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and“ God has visited his people today.”And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.

So they went on to another village.
