總管以利亞敬、書記舍伯那和史官約亞都撕裂衣服，去向希西迦稟告亞述的將軍說的話。希西迦王聽了就撕裂衣服，披上麻衣，進入耶和華的殿。他派身披麻衣的宮廷總管以利亞敬、書記舍伯那和祭司中的長者去見亞摩斯的兒子以賽亞先知，

一聽到這些，我便撕裂衣服和外袍，拔掉頭髮和鬍鬚，驚懼地坐下。聽了以色列上帝的話而戰抖的人都聚集在我周圍，因為流亡歸來的人不忠。我驚懼地坐在那裡，直到獻晚祭的時候。獻晚祭的時候，我滿懷憂傷地起來，穿著那撕裂的衣服和外袍，雙膝跪下，向我的上帝耶和華伸出雙手，

城裡的居民分成了兩派，有些附和猶太人，有些支持使徒。

難道我們沒有權利像主的兄弟、彼得和其他使徒一樣，娶信主的姊妹為妻，一同出入嗎？難道只有我和巴拿巴要自食其力嗎？

大祭司便撕裂衣服，說：「我們還需要什麼證人呢？

以色列王讀完信後，就撕裂衣服說：「難道我是上帝嗎？我能操縱人的生死嗎？這人竟叫我醫好一個人的痲瘋病！他只是想找藉口攻打我。」
