The four prominent horns that replaced the one large horn show that the Greek Empire will break into four kingdoms, but none as great as the first.

But any nation who refuses to obey me will be uprooted and destroyed. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

But afterward I will return and have compassion on all of them. I will bring them home to their own lands again, each nation to its own possession.

In my vision that night, I, Daniel, saw a great storm churning the surface of a great sea, with strong winds blowing from every direction.

As I was looking at the horns, suddenly another small horn appeared among them. Three of the first horns were torn out by the roots to make room for it. This little horn had eyes like human eyes and a mouth that was boasting arrogantly.

If I announce that a certain nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed,

We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it.

I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.And who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish? Yet they will control everything I have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun. How meaningless!

Jesus knew their thoughts and replied,“ Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart.

“ Baruch, this is what the Lord says:‘ I will destroy this nation that I built. I will uproot what I planted.

“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

the triumph of the wicked has been short lived and the joy of the godless has been only temporary?Though the pride of the godless reaches to the heavens and their heads touch the clouds,yet they will vanish forever, thrown away like their own dung. Those who knew them will ask,‘ Where are they?’

I have seen wicked and ruthless people flourishing like a tree in its native soil.But when I looked again, they were gone! Though I searched for them, I could not find them!

Then the third of these strange beasts appeared, and it looked like a leopard. It had four bird’s wings on its back, and it had four heads. Great authority was given to this beast.

And the entire area— including the graveyard and ash dump in the valley, and all the fields out to the Kidron Valley on the east as far as the Horse Gate— will be holy to the Lord. The city will never again be captured or destroyed.”

This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself,“ Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.

They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches.Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God.Redemption does not come so easily, for no one can ever pay enoughto live forever and never see the grave.Those who are wise must finally die, just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their wealth behind.The grave is their eternal home, where they will stay forever. They may name their estates after themselves,but their fame will not last. They will die, just like animals.

Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.Truly, you put them on a slippery path and send them sliding over the cliff to destruction.In an instant they are destroyed, completely swept away by terrors.When you arise, O Lord, you will laugh at their silly ideas as a person laughs at dreams in the morning.
