They come to you in crowds, and they sit in front of you as my people. They hear your words, but do not obey them. For they talk lustfully, and their heart is set on their own advantage.

My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.

My people come to you, just as they usually do. They sit in front of you. They hear what you say. But they do not put it into practice. With their mouths they say they love me. But in their hearts they want what belongs to others. They try to get rich by cheating them.

And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain.

So my people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money.

So my people come to you in crowds, sit in front of you, and hear your words, but they don’t obey them. Their mouths go on passionately, but their hearts pursue dishonest profit.

And they come to you as people come, and sit before you as My people and hear your words, but they do not do them; for they do the lustful desires expressed by their mouth, and their heart follows their unlawful gain.

So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain.

And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but do them not; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their gain.

And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee[ as] my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love,[ but] their heart goeth after their covetousness.

They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but don’t do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain.

The seed sown among thorns is the person who hears the word, but worldly cares and the seductiveness of wealth choke the word, so it produces nothing.

But they deceived him with their words, and lied to him.They were not really committed to him, and they were unfaithful to his covenant.

The sovereign master says,“ These people say they are loyal to me; they say wonderful things about me, but they are not really loyal to me. Their worship consists of nothing but man- made ritual.

But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves.For if someone merely listens to the message and does not live it out, he is like someone who gazes at his own face in a mirror.For he gazes at himself and then goes out and immediately forgets what sort of person he was.

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can this kind of faith save him?If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacks daily food,and one of you says to them,“ Go in peace, keep warm and eat well,” but you do not give them what the body needs, what good is it?

But he replied,“ Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!”

He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep, and laid the foundation on bedrock. When a flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built.But the person who hears and does not put my words into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against that house, it collapsed immediately, and was utterly destroyed!”

In the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth of the month, as I was sitting in my house with the elders of Judah sitting in front of me, the hand of the sovereign LORD seized me.

So the LORD’s word to them will sound like meaningless gibberish, senseless babbling, a syllable here, a syllable there. As a result, they will fall on their backsides when they try to walk, and be injured, ensnared, and captured.

But whoever has the world’s possessions and sees his fellow Christian in need and shuts off his compassion against him, how can the love of God reside in such a person?Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.

Those who long to be rich, however, stumble into temptation and a trap and many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains.

When the LORD heard you speaking to me, he said to me,“ I have heard what these people have said to you– they have spoken well.If only it would really be their desire to fear me and obey all my commandments in the future, so that it may go well with them and their descendants forever.

But when the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he was very rich.

Then some men from Israel’s elders came to me and sat down in front of me.

In the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, some of the elders of Israel came to seek the LORD, and they sat down in front of me.The word of the LORD came to me:“ Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and tell them:‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: Are you coming to seek me? As surely as I live, I will not allow you to seek me, declares the sovereign LORD.’“ Are you willing to pronounce judgment? Are you willing to pronounce judgment, son of man? Then confront them with the abominable practices of their fathers,and say to them:“‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: On the day I chose Israel I swore to the descendants of the house of Jacob and made myself known to them in the land of Egypt. I swore to them,“ I am the LORD your God.”On that day I swore to bring them out of the land of Egypt to a land which I had picked out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands.I said to them,“ Each of you must get rid of the detestable idols you keep before you, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the LORD your God.”But they rebelled against me, and refused to listen to me; no one got rid of their detestable idols, nor did they abandon the idols of Egypt. Then I decided to pour out my rage on them and fully vent my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.I acted for the sake of my reputation, so that I would not be profaned before the nations among whom they lived, before whom I revealed myself by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.“‘ So I brought them out of the land of Egypt and led them to the wilderness.I gave them my statutes and revealed my regulations to them. The one who carries them out will live by them!I also gave them my Sabbaths as a reminder of our relationship, so that they would know that I, the LORD, sanctify them.But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness; they did not follow my statutes and they rejected my regulations( the one who obeys them will live by them), and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths. So I decided to pour out my rage on them in the wilderness and destroy them.I acted for the sake of my reputation, so that I would not be profaned before the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.I also swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them to the land I had given them– a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands.I did this because they rejected my regulations, did not follow my statutes, and desecrated my Sabbaths; for their hearts followed their idols.Yet I had pity on them and did not destroy them, so I did not make an end of them in the wilderness.“‘ But I said to their children in the wilderness,“ Do not follow the practices of your fathers; do not observe their regulations, nor defile yourselves with their idols.I am the LORD your God; follow my statutes, observe my regulations, and carry them out.Treat my Sabbaths as holy and they will be a reminder of our relationship, and then you will know that I am the LORD your God.”“‘ But the children rebelled against me, did not follow my statutes, did not observe my regulations by carrying them out( the one who obeys them will live by them), and desecrated my Sabbaths. I decided to pour out my rage on them and fully vent my anger against them in the wilderness.But I refrained from doing so, and acted instead for the sake of my reputation, so that I would not be profaned before the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.I also swore to them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them throughout the lands.I did this because they did not observe my regulations, they rejected my statutes, they desecrated my Sabbaths, and their eyes were fixed on their fathers’ idols.I also gave them decrees which were not good and regulations by which they could not live.I declared them to be defiled because of their sacrifices– they caused all their first born to pass through the fire– so that I would devastate them, so that they will know that I am the LORD.’“ Therefore, speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and tell them,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: In this way too your fathers blasphemed me when they were unfaithful to me.I brought them to the land which I swore to give them, but whenever they saw any high hill or leafy tree, they offered their sacrifices there and presented the offerings that provoke me to anger. They offered their soothing aroma there and poured out their drink offerings.So I said to them, What is this high place you go to?’”( So it is called“ High Place” to this day.)“ Therefore say to the house of Israel,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: Will you defile yourselves like your fathers and engage in prostitution with detestable idols?When you present your sacrifices– when you make your sons pass through the fire– you defile yourselves with all your idols to this very day. Will I allow you to seek me, O house of Israel? As surely as I live, declares the sovereign LORD, I will not allow you to seek me!“‘ What you plan will never happen. You say,“ We will be like the nations, like the clans of the lands, who serve gods of wood and stone.”

“ No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Then he said to them,“ Watch out and guard yourself from all types of greed, because one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”He then told them a parable:“ The land of a certain rich man produced an abundant crop,so he thought to himself,‘ What should I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’Then he said,‘ I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.And I will say to myself,“ You have plenty of goods stored up for many years; relax, eat, drink, celebrate!”’But God said to him,‘ You fool! This very night your life will be demanded back from you, but who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, but is not rich toward God.”

But he replied to them,“ My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jeremiah finished telling all the people all these things the LORD their God had sent him to tell them.Then Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and other arrogant men said to Jeremiah,“ You are telling a lie! The LORD our God did not send you to tell us,‘ You must not go to Egypt and settle there.’But Baruch son of Neriah is stirring you up against us. He wants to hand us over to the Babylonians so that they will kill us or carry us off into exile in Babylon.”So Johanan son of Kareah, all the army officers, and all the rest of the people did not obey the LORD’s command to stay in the land.Instead Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers led off all the Judean remnant who had come back to live in the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been scattered.They also led off all the men, women, children, and royal princesses that Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard, had left with Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan. This included the prophet Jeremiah and Baruch son of Neriah.They went on to Egypt because they refused to obey the LORD, and came to Tahpanhes.

She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he said.

The LORD said to me,“ Jeremiah, when one of these people, or a prophet, or a priest asks you,‘ What burdensome message do you have from the LORD?’ Tell them,‘ You are the burden, and I will cast you away. I, the LORD, affirm it!I will punish any prophet, priest, or other person who says“ The LORD’s message is burdensome.” I will punish both that person and his whole family.’”So I, Jeremiah, tell you,“ Each of you people should say to his friend or his relative,‘ How did the LORD answer? Or what did the LORD say?’You must no longer say that the LORD’s message is burdensome. For what is‘ burdensome’ really pertains to what a person himself says. You are misrepresenting the words of our God, the living God, the LORD who rules over all.Each of you should merely ask the prophet,‘ What answer did the LORD give you? Or what did the LORD say?’But just suppose you continue to say,‘ The message of the LORD is burdensome.’ Here is what the LORD says will happen:‘ I sent word to you that you must not say,“ The LORD’s message is burdensome.” But you used the words“ The LORD’s message is burdensome” anyway.

Her officials are like wolves in her midst rending their prey– shedding blood and destroying lives– so they can get dishonest profit.

The LORD said to his people:“ You are standing at the crossroads. So consider your path. Ask where the old, reliable paths are. Ask where the path is that leads to blessing and follow it. If you do, you will find rest for your souls.” But they said,“ We will not follow it!”The LORD said,“ I appointed prophets as watchmen to warn you, saying:‘ Pay attention to the warning sound of the trumpet!’” But they said,“ We will not pay attention!”

The Pharisees( who loved money) heard all this and ridiculed him.

“ Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on rock.The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, but it did not collapse because it had been founded on rock.Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, and it collapsed; it was utterly destroyed!”

Therefore I sent for you at once, and you were kind enough to come. So now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to say to us.”

“ We will not listen to what you claim the LORD has spoken to us!

For you can be confident of this one thing: that no person who is immoral, impure, or greedy( such a person is an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
