摩西帶領以色列人離開紅海，來到書珥曠野，走了三天仍然找不到水喝。到了瑪拉，那裡的水卻是苦的，不能喝。因此那地方叫瑪拉。百姓就埋怨摩西說：「我們喝什麼呢？」摩西向耶和華呼求，耶和華就指示他把一棵樹丟在水中，使水變得甘甜。耶和華又在瑪拉給百姓定下一些律例和法令，並在那裡試驗他們，

上帝啊，你是我的上帝，我迫切地尋求你！在乾旱荒涼之地，我的心渴慕你，渴慕你！

於是，以色列王跟猶大王和以東王聯合出兵。他們繞道行了七天，軍隊和隨行的牲畜都沒有水喝了。

貴族派僕人去水池打水，僕人去那裡發現沒有水，就帶著空瓶垂頭喪氣、羞愧難當地回去了。

第二天，亞伯拉罕清早起來，把食物和一皮袋水放在夏甲肩上，讓她和孩子離開。夏甲在別示巴的曠野流浪。

以色列全體會眾按照耶和華的吩咐，從汛曠野啟程，一程一程往前行，來到利非訂安營，可是那裡沒有水喝。百姓便跟摩西吵鬧，要他給他們水喝。摩西便對他們說：「你們為什麼跟我吵鬧？為什麼試探耶和華？」百姓非常口渴，他們向摩西抱怨說：「你為什麼要把我們帶出埃及，讓我們一家大小和牲畜都在這裡渴死？」

鐵匠把鐵塊放在炭火裡燒，用他強壯的臂膀揮動鐵錘把它打成偶像。他饑餓時就會無力，口渴時就會疲乏。
