The couriers traveled from city to city in the land of Ephraim and Manasseh as far as Zebulun, but the inhabitants laughed at them and mocked them.

The officials were angry at Jeremiah and beat him and placed him in jail in the house of Jonathan the scribe, for it had been made into a prison.So Jeremiah went into a cell in the dungeon and stayed there many days.King Zedekiah later sent for him and received him, and in his house privately asked him,“ Is there a word from the LORD?”“ There is,” Jeremiah responded. He continued,“ You will be handed over to the king of Babylon.”Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah,“ How have I sinned against you or your servants or these people that you have put me in prison?Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming,‘ The king of Babylon will not come against you and this land’?So now please listen, my lord the king. May my petition come before you. Don’t send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there.”So King Zedekiah gave orders, and Jeremiah was placed in the guard’s courtyard. He was given a loaf of bread each day from the bakers’ street until all the bread was gone from the city. So Jeremiah remained in the guard’s courtyard.

But they kept ridiculing God’s messengers, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, until the LORD’s wrath was so stirred up against his people that there was no remedy.

You deceived me, LORD, and I was deceived. You seized me and prevailed. I am a laughingstock all the time; everyone ridicules me.

Then the commander approached, took him into custody, and ordered him to be bound with two chains. He asked who he was and what he had done.

Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will experience affliction for ten days. Be faithful to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.

for which I suffer to the point of being bound like a criminal. But the word of God is not bound.

Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked him, dressed him in bright clothing, and sent him back to Pilate.

So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the guard’s courtyard, lowering Jeremiah with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.But Ebed-melech, a Cushite court official in the king’s palace, heard Jeremiah had been put into the cistern. While the king was sitting at the Benjamin Gate,Ebed-melech went from the king’s palace and spoke to the king:“ My lord the king, these men have been evil in all they have done to the prophet Jeremiah. They have dropped him into the cistern where he will die from hunger, because there is no more bread in the city.”So the king commanded Ebed-melech, the Cushite,“ Take from here thirty men under your authority and pull the prophet Jeremiah up from the cistern before he dies.”So Ebed-melech took the men under his authority and went to the king’s palace to a place below the storehouse. From there he took old rags and worn-out clothes and lowered them by ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.Ebed-melech the Cushite called down to Jeremiah,“ Place these old rags and clothes between your armpits and the ropes.” Jeremiah did this.They pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern, but he remained in the guard’s courtyard.

Jeremiah remained in the guard’s courtyard until the day Jerusalem was captured, and he was there when it happened.

So they seized them and took them into custody until the next day since it was already evening.

‘ The LORD has appointed you priest in place of the priest Jehoiada to be the chief officer in the temple of the LORD, responsible for every madman who acts like a prophet. You must confine him in the stocks and an iron collar.

For he will be handed over to the Gentiles, and he will be mocked, insulted, spit on;

The farmers took his servants, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.

From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking up the path, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him, chanting,“ Go up, baldy! Go up, baldy!”

They will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged, and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.”

After they called in the apostles and had them flogged, they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them.

They went outside and passed one street, and suddenly the angel left him.When Peter came to himself, he said,“ Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s grasp and from all that the Jewish people expected.”As soon as he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was called Mark, where many had assembled and were praying.He knocked at the door of the outer gate, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer.She recognized Peter’s voice, and because of her joy, she did not open the gate but ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the outer gate.“ You’re out of your mind!” they told her. But she kept insisting that it was true, and they said,“ It’s his angel.”Peter, however, kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were amazed.Motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison.“ Tell these things to James and the brothers,” he said, and he left and went to another place.At daylight, there was a great commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter.After Herod had searched and did not find him, he interrogated the guards and ordered their execution. Then Herod went down from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there.

The crowd joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods.After they had severely flogged them, they threw them in jail, ordering the jailer to guard them carefully.Receiving such an order, he put them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the jail were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains came loose.When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison standing open, he drew his sword and was going to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped.But Paul called out in a loud voice,“ Don’t harm yourself, because we’re all here!”The jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.He escorted them out and said,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”They said,“ Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved— you and your household.”And they spoke the word of the Lord to him along with everyone in his house.He took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds. Right away he and all his family were baptized.He brought them into his house, set a meal before them, and rejoiced because he had come to believe in God with his entire household.When daylight came, the chief magistrates sent the police to say,“ Release those men.”The jailer reported these words to Paul:“ The magistrates have sent orders for you to be released. So come out now and go in peace.”But Paul said to them,“ They beat us in public without a trial, although we are Roman citizens, and threw us in jail. And now are they going to send us away secretly? Certainly not! On the contrary, let them come themselves and escort us out.”The police reported these words to the magistrates. They were afraid when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.So they came to appease them, and escorting them from prison, they urged them to leave town.After leaving the jail, they came to Lydia’s house, where they saw and encouraged the brothers and sisters, and departed.

Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received,

May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.

After two years had passed, Porcius Festus succeeded Felix, and because Felix wanted to do the Jews a favor, he left Paul in prison.

Saul, however, was ravaging the church. He would enter house after house, drag off men and women, and put them in prison.

When they were in good spirits, they said,“ Bring Samson here to entertain us.” So they brought Samson from prison, and he entertained them. They had him stand between the pillars.
