我不恃亞述之救援、不復乘馬、不復謂我手所造者曰、爾為我神、孤兒必蒙矜憫於爾耶和華、

我不求救於亞述、不恃驍騎、不稱所作之像為我上帝、無父之子、惟爾矜憫、

我儕不復求救於亞述、不復欲乘伊及之馬、不再稱己手所造者為我之天主、我之天主或作我儕之神無父之子、惟主矜恤、

Assyria cannot save us; we will not mount warhorses. We will never again say‘ Our gods’ to what our own hands have made, for in you the fatherless find compassion.”

Assyria can’t save us. We won’t trust in our war horses. Our own hands have made statues of gods. But we will never call them our gods again. We are like children whose fathers have died. But you show us your tender love.”

But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief, To repay it by Your hand. The helpless commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.

A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in His holy habitation.

A horse is a vain hope for safety; Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength.

I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

For I will take from her mouth the names of the Baals, And they shall be remembered by their name no more.

“ When Ephraim saw his sickness, And Judah saw his wound, Then Ephraim went to Assyria And sent to King Jareb; Yet he cannot cure you, Nor heal you of your wound.

“ Ephraim shall say,‘ What have I to do anymore with idols?’ I have heard and observed him. I am like a green cypress tree; Your fruit is found in Me.”

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, And rely on horses, Who trust in chariots because they are many, And in horsemen because they are very strong, But who do not look to the Holy One of Israel, Nor seek the Lord!

And you said,“ No, for we will flee on horses”— Therefore you shall flee! And,“ We will ride on swift horses”— Therefore those who pursue you shall be swift!

For they have gone up to Assyria, Like a wild donkey alone by itself; Ephraim has hired lovers.

Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.

But he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the Lord has said to you,‘ You shall not return that way again.’

Therefore by this the iniquity of Jacob will be covered; And this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: When he makes all the stones of the altar Like chalkstones that are beaten to dust, Wooden images and incense altars shall not stand.

The Lord watches over the strangers; He relieves the fatherless and widow; But the way of the wicked He turns upside down.

“ Ephraim also is like a silly dove, without sense— They call to Egypt, They go to Assyria.

Who walk to go down to Egypt, And have not asked My advice, To strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, And to trust in the shadow of Egypt!

And He said to me,“ Son of man, this is the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel forever. No more shall the house of Israel defile My holy name, they nor their kings, by their harlotry or with the carcasses of their kings on their high places.When they set their threshold by My threshold, and their doorpost by My doorpost, with a wall between them and Me, they defiled My holy name by the abominations which they committed; therefore I have consumed them in My anger.Now let them put their harlotry and the carcasses of their kings far away from Me, and I will dwell in their midst forever.

For they shall be ashamed of the terebinth trees Which you have desired; And you shall be embarrassed because of the gardens Which you have chosen.

And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him:“ Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the Lord your God, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hand.

Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; And their horses are flesh, and not spirit. When the Lord stretches out His hand, Both he who helps will fall, And he who is helped will fall down; They all will perish together.

“ And it shall be in that day,” says the Lord,“ That I will cut off your horses from your midst And destroy your chariots.I will cut off the cities of your land And throw down all your strongholds.I will cut off sorceries from your hand, And you shall have no soothsayers.Your carved images I will also cut off, And your sacred pillars from your midst; You shall no more worship the work of your hands;I will pluck your wooden images from your midst; Thus I will destroy your cities.

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.They have bowed down and fallen; But we have risen and stand upright.

They shall not defile themselves anymore with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions; but I will deliver them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them. Then they shall be My people, and I will be their God.

For from Israel is even this: A workman made it, and it is not God; But the calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces.

“ You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child.If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to Me, I will surely hear their cry;and My wrath will become hot, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

Do not remove the ancient landmark, Nor enter the fields of the fatherless;For their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you.

In that day a man will cast away his idols of silver And his idols of gold, Which they made, each for himself to worship, To the moles and bats,

“ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself:‘ You have chastised me, and I was chastised, Like an untrained bull; Restore me, and I will return, For You are the Lord my God.Surely, after my turning, I repented; And after I was instructed, I struck myself on the thigh; I was ashamed, yes, even humiliated, Because I bore the reproach of my youth.’Is Ephraim My dear son? Is he a pleasant child? For though I spoke against him, I earnestly remember him still; Therefore My heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says the Lord.“ Set up signposts, Make landmarks; Set your heart toward the highway, The way in which you went. Turn back, O virgin of Israel, Turn back to these your cities.How long will you gad about, O you backsliding daughter? For the Lord has created a new thing in the earth— A woman shall encompass a man.”

“ It shall be in that day,” says the Lord of hosts,“ that I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land.

“ Ephraim feeds on the wind, And pursues the east wind; He daily increases lies and desolation. Also they make a covenant with the Assyrians, And oil is carried to Egypt.

Do not put your trust in princes, Nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.

Now therefore, I urge you, give a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses— if you are able on your part to put riders on them!
