Look, all his associates will be put to shame; the craftsmen are mere humans. Let them all assemble and take their stand! They will panic and be put to shame.

People who do that will be put to shame; such craftsmen are only human beings. Let them all come together and take their stand; they will be brought down to terror and shame.

All who worship idols are ashamed, those who boast about worthless idols. All the gods bow down before him.

Indeed, they will be ashamed of the sacred trees you find so desirable; you will be embarrassed because of the sacred orchards where you choose to worship.

King Nebuchadnezzar had a golden statue made. It was ninety feet tall and nine feet wide. He erected it on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent out a summons to assemble the satraps, prefects, governors, counselors, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the other authorities of the province to attend the dedication of the statue that he had erected.So the satraps, prefects, governors, counselors, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the other provincial authorities assembled for the dedication of the statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had erected. They were standing in front of the statue that Nebuchadnezzar had erected.Then the herald made a loud proclamation:“ To you, O peoples, nations, and language groups, the following command is given:When you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, trigon, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must bow down and pay homage to the golden statue that King Nebuchadnezzar has erected.Whoever does not bow down and pay homage will immediately be thrown into the midst of a furnace of blazing fire!”Therefore when they all heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, trigon, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, nations, and language groups began bowing down and paying homage to the golden statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had erected.

All idolaters will prove to be stupid and ignorant. Every goldsmith will be disgraced by the idol he made. For the image he forges is merely a sham. There is no breath in any of those idols.

When the residents of Ashdod got up early the next day, Dagon was lying on the ground before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and set him back in his place.But when they got up early the following day, Dagon was again lying on the ground before the ark of the LORD. The head of Dagon and his two hands were sheared off and were lying at the threshold. Only Dagon’s body was left intact.( For this reason, to this very day, neither Dagon’s priests nor anyone else who enters Dagon’s temple step on Dagon’s threshold in Ashdod.)The LORD attacked the residents of Ashdod severely, bringing devastation on them. He struck the people of both Ashdod and the surrounding area with sores.When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said,“ The ark of the God of Israel should not remain with us, for he has attacked both us and our god Dagon!”

The coastlands see and are afraid; the whole earth trembles; they approach and come.They help one another; one says to the other,‘ Be strong!’The craftsman encourages the metalsmith, the one who wields the hammer encourages the one who pounds on the anvil. He approves the quality of the welding, and nails it down so it won’t fall over.”

The rulers of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate. They said,“ Our god has handed Samson, our enemy, over to us.”When the people saw him, they praised their god, saying,“ Our god has handed our enemy over to us, the one who ruined our land and killed so many of us!”When they really started celebrating, they said,“ Call for Samson so he can entertain us!” So they summoned Samson from the prison and he entertained them. They made him stand between two pillars.Samson said to the young man who held his hand,“ Position me so I can touch the pillars that support the temple. Then I can lean on them.”Now the temple was filled with men and women, and all the rulers of the Philistines were there. There were three thousand men and women on the roof watching Samson entertain.Samson called to the LORD,“ O Master, LORD, remember me! Strengthen me just one more time, O God, so I can get swift revenge against the Philistines for my two eyes!”Samson took hold of the two middle pillars that supported the temple and he leaned against them, with his right hand on one and his left hand on the other.Samson said,“ Let me die with the Philistines!” He pushed hard and the temple collapsed on the rulers and all the people in it. He killed many more people in his death than he had killed during his life.

For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought a great deal of business to the craftsmen.He gathered these together, along with the workmen in similar trades, and said,“ Men, you know that our prosperity comes from this business.And you see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a large crowd, not only in Ephesus but in practically all of the province of Asia, by saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all.There is danger not only that this business of ours will come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be regarded as nothing, and she whom all the province of Asia and the world worship will suffer the loss of her greatness.”When they heard this they became enraged and began to shout,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”The city was filled with the uproar, and the crowd rushed to the theater together, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, the Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions.But when Paul wanted to enter the public assembly, the disciples would not let him.Even some of the provincial authorities who were his friends sent a message to him, urging him not to venture into the theater.So then some were shouting one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had met together.Some of the crowd concluded it was about Alexander because the Jews had pushed him to the front. Alexander, gesturing with his hand, was wanting to make a defense before the public assembly.But when they recognized that he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” for about two hours.

They said to one another,“ Who did this?” They investigated the matter thoroughly and concluded that Gideon son of Joash had done it.The men of the city said to Joash,“ Bring out your son, so we can execute him! He pulled down the Baal altar and cut down the nearby Asherah pole.”But Joash said to all those who confronted him,“ Must you fight Baal’s battles? Must you rescue him? Whoever takes up his cause will die by morning! If he really is a god, let him fight his own battles! After all, it was his altar that was pulled down.”That very day Gideon’s father named him Jerub-Baal, because he had said,“ Let Baal fight with him, for it was his altar that was pulled down.”

Now send out messengers and assemble all Israel before me at Mount Carmel, as well as the 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah whom Jezebel supports.Ahab sent messengers to all the Israelites and had the prophets assemble at Mount Carmel.Elijah approached all the people and said,“ How long are you going to be paralyzed by indecision? If the LORD is the true God, then follow him, but if Baal is, follow him!” But the people did not say a word.Elijah said to them:“ I am the only prophet of the LORD who is left, but there are 450 prophets of Baal.Let them bring us two bulls. Let them choose one of the bulls for themselves, cut it up into pieces, and place it on the wood. But they must not set it on fire. I will do the same to the other bull and place it on the wood. But I will not set it on fire.Then you will invoke the name of your god, and I will invoke the name of the LORD. The god who responds with fire will demonstrate that he is the true God.” All the people responded,“ This will be a fair test.”Elijah told the prophets of Baal,“ Choose one of the bulls for yourselves and go first, for you are the majority. Invoke the name of your god, but do not light a fire.”So they took a bull, as he had suggested, and prepared it. They invoked the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying,“ Baal, answer us.” But there was no sound and no answer. They jumped around on the altar they had made.At noon Elijah mocked them,“ Yell louder! After all, he is a god; he may be deep in thought, or perhaps he stepped out for a moment or has taken a trip. Perhaps he is sleeping and needs to be awakened.”So they yelled louder and, in accordance with their prescribed ritual, mutilated themselves with swords and spears until their bodies were covered with blood.Throughout the afternoon they were in an ecstatic frenzy, but there was no sound, no answer, and no response.

They inquired,“ What is the guilt offering that we should send to him?” They replied,“ The Philistine leaders number five. So send five gold sores and five gold mice, for it is the same plague that has afflicted both you and your leaders.You should make images of the sores and images of the mice that are destroying the land. You should honor the God of Israel. Perhaps he will release his grip on you, your gods, and your land.

Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to do battle with the one who rode the horse and with his army.Now the beast was seized, and along with him the false prophet who had performed the signs on his behalf– signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. Both of them were thrown alive into the lake of fire burning with sulfur.The others were killed by the sword that extended from the mouth of the one who rode the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves with their flesh.

Just as a thief has to suffer dishonor when he is caught, so the people of Israel will suffer dishonor for what they have done. So will their kings and officials, their priests and their prophets.They say to a wooden idol,‘ You are my father.’ They say to a stone image,‘ You gave birth to me.’ Yes, they have turned away from me instead of turning to me. Yet when they are in trouble, they say,‘ Come and save us!’

Elijah told them,“ Seize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let even one of them escape!” So they seized them, and Elijah led them down to the Kishon Valley and executed them there.

King Belshazzar prepared a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles, and he was drinking wine in front of them all.While under the influence of the wine, Belshazzar issued an order to bring in the gold and silver vessels– the ones that Nebuchadnezzar his father had confiscated from the temple in Jerusalem– so that the king and his nobles, together with his wives and his concubines, could drink from them.So they brought the gold and silver vessels that had been confiscated from the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, together with his wives and concubines, drank from them.As they drank wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.At that very moment the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the royal palace wall, opposite the lampstand. The king was watching the back of the hand that was writing.Then all the color drained from the king’s face and he became alarmed. The joints of his hips gave way, and his knees began knocking together.
