以下這些國的人就是永恆主所留下，為要藉着他們來試驗以色列人，一切不曾經驗過迦南任何戰事的人，不過是要叫以色列後代、至少那些從未經驗戰事的、經驗經驗戰事，好得教導而已。所留下的就是：非利士人的五個霸主、和一切迦南人、西頓人，和住利巴嫩山的希未人，從巴力黑們山直到哈馬口。他們在那裏，這是要藉着他們來試驗以色列人，好知道他們肯不肯聽從永恆主的誡命、就是永恆主由摩西經手所吩咐他們祖宗的。於是以色列人住在迦南人、赫人、亞摩利人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人中間，娶他們的女兒為妻，把自己的女兒嫁給他們的兒子，並且服事他們的神。
