Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.

No one has any sense or knows anything at all. Everyone who works with gold is put to shame by his gods. The metal gods he has made are fakes. They can’t even breathe.

Every man is stupid and without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his images are false, and there is no breath in them.

The whole human race is foolish and has no knowledge! The craftsmen are disgraced by the idols they make, for their carefully shaped works are a fraud. These idols have no breath or power.

他們將神像抬起，扛在肩頭上，安置在定處，它就站在那裏，總不離開其位置；就使有人向它哀叫，它也不能應，不能救人脫離患難。『你們要懷念這事，而堅定不移，悖逆的人哪，心裏回想吧！

外國人的偶像是銀的或金的，是人的手所作的。他們有口、卻不能說話；有眼、卻不能看；有耳、卻不能聽；有鼻、卻不能聞；有手、卻不能摸；有腳、卻不能走路；也不能用喉嚨出聲。造它們的、正和它們一樣；凡倚靠它們的、正如它們一般。

雕刻的偶像、塑造它的將它刻成、有甚麼益處？鑄造的偶像、虛假的導師、塑造它的將它塑成、造座啞巴神像去倚靠它、有甚麼益處？那對木偶說「醒起！」、對啞巴石像說「奮起！」的有禍啊！嘿，這能做導師！看哪，這只是包裹金銀的，其中毫無氣息！

他們不知道，也不明白，因為他們的眼被塗抹了，以致不能看見，他們的心蒙蔽了，以致不能了解。沒有一個人心裏回悟過來，也沒有一個有知識有聰明能夠說：「木頭的一半我已經燒在火中，我也曾在其炭火上烤過餅，烤過肉喫；難道其剩下的我還要作一座可厭惡之像！我還要向樹木頭叩拜！」嘿，以爐灰為食的人！被愚弄的心使他偏行了；他不能援救自己，也不能說：『莫非我右手中有虛假？』

拜偶像的人一概是畜類、是愚頑，是虛無神所指教的：那神不過是木頭，

那倚靠雕刻之像的、那對鑄造的像說：『你們是我們的神』的，這種人必退後，全然蒙羞。

人都等於畜類，毫無知識；銀匠都因其雕像而慚愧；因為他鑄的象都是虛假，裏面並無氣息。偶像簡直是虛無，是惹人嘲笑的傑作！到受察罰時、一定滅亡。

他們自稱為有智慧，反而成了愚拙，用那能敗壞的人類、飛鳥、走獸、昆蟲之像的樣式、去代換那不能朽壞的上帝之榮耀。

製作偶像的匠人必失望狼狽，一概同歸於絕望。

願一切服事雕像的都抱愧，願那靠偶相而自誇的、都蒙羞；萬神都敬拜他。

看哪，所有依附着它、的人都必失望，製作它、的匠人極為狼狽；他們儘管集合攏來，儘管挺身而立，都必覺得恐懼、一概失望。

永恆主從天上垂看着人類，要看有明智的沒有，有尋求上帝的沒有。

民間的畜類人哪，你們要明白；愚頑人哪，你們到幾時才能通達呢？

我是畜類無知，不齒於人類的；我沒有世人的明達。
