Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand:

Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth who are threatening to kill you, saying,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord or you will die by our hands”—

The Lord says,“ Jeremiah, here is what I am telling you about the people of Anathoth. They say they’re going to kill you. They are saying,‘ Don’t prophesy in the Lord’ s name. If you do, we will kill you with our own hands.’ ”

Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, and say,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, or you will die by our hand”—

This is what the Lord says about the men of Anathoth who wanted me dead. They had said,“ We will kill you if you do not stop prophesying in the Lord’s name.”

Therefore, here is what the LORD says concerning the people of Anathoth who intend to take your life. They warn,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, or you will certainly die at our hand.”

Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth, who are seeking your life, saying:“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, so that you do not die by our hand”;

“ Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth who seek your life, saying,‘ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, lest you die by our hand’—

Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Thou shalt not prophesy in the name of Jehovah, that thou die not by our hand;

Therefore, here is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth who want to take your life. They warn,“ You must not prophesy in the name of Yahweh, or you will certainly die at our hand.”

Then the LORD told me about some men from Anathoth who were threatening to kill me. They had threatened,“ Stop prophesying in the name of the LORD or we will kill you!”

“ Therefore Yahweh says concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, saying,‘ You shall not prophesy in Yahweh’s name, that you not die by our hand;’

Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the[ day] following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen[ doth gather] her brood under[ her] wings, and ye would not!

For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report,[ say they], and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting,[ saying], Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.

Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and[ if] in the land of peace,[ wherein] thou trustedst,[ they wearied thee], then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.

But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.

And the remnant took his servants, and entreated[ them] spitefully, and slew[ them].

Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded[ him] to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die.

And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.

And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers[ did], so[ do] ye.Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he[ is] in your hand: for the king[ is] not[ he that] can do[ any] thing against you.Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that[ was] in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon[ there was] no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and[ some] of them ye shall kill and crucify; and[ some] of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute[ them] from city to city:That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.O Jerusalem, Jerusalem,[ thou] that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under[ her] wings, and ye would not!

Now Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who[ was] also chief governor in the house of the LORD, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things.Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that[ were] in the high gate of Benjamin, which[ was] by the house of the LORD.

For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies[ are] the men of his own house.

And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against[ their] parents, and cause them to be put to death.

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.And a man’s foes[ shall be] they of his own household.

But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it[ is] the king’s chapel, and it[ is] the king’s court.Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I[ was] no prophet, neither[ was] I a prophet’s son; but I[ was] an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not[ thy word] against the house of Isaac.

Prophesy ye not,[ say they to them that] prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them,[ that] they shall not take shame.O[ thou that art] named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the LORD straitened?[ are] these his doings? do not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly?Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy: ye pull off the robe with the garment from them that pass by securely as men averse from war.The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever.Arise ye, and depart; for this[ is] not[ your] rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy[ you], even with a sore destruction.If a man walking in the spirit and falsehood do lie,[ saying], I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.
