Then the LORD told me about some men from Anathoth who were threatening to kill me. They had threatened,“ Stop prophesying in the name of the LORD or we will kill you!”

Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth who are threatening to kill you, saying,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord or you will die by our hands”—

The Lord says,“ Jeremiah, here is what I am telling you about the people of Anathoth. They say they’re going to kill you. They are saying,‘ Don’t prophesy in the Lord’ s name. If you do, we will kill you with our own hands.’ ”

Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, and say,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, or you will die by our hand”—

This is what the Lord says about the men of Anathoth who wanted me dead. They had said,“ We will kill you if you do not stop prophesying in the Lord’s name.”

Therefore, here is what the LORD says concerning the people of Anathoth who intend to take your life. They warn,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, or you will certainly die at our hand.”

Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth, who are seeking your life, saying:“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, so that you do not die by our hand”;

“ Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth who seek your life, saying,‘ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, lest you die by our hand’—

Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Thou shalt not prophesy in the name of Jehovah, that thou die not by our hand;

Therefore, here is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth who want to take your life. They warn,“ You must not prophesy in the name of Yahweh, or you will certainly die at our hand.”

Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand:

“ Therefore Yahweh says concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, saying,‘ You shall not prophesy in Yahweh’s name, that you not die by our hand;’

Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the next day, because it is impossible that a prophet should be killed outside Jerusalem.’O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!

I hear many whispering words of intrigue against me. Those who would cause me terror are everywhere! They are saying,“ Come on, let’s publicly denounce him!” All my so-called friends are just watching for something that would lead to my downfall. They say,“ Perhaps he can be enticed into slipping up, so we can prevail over him and get our revenge on him.

They say to the visionaries,“ See no more visions!” and to the seers,“ Don’t relate messages to us about what is right! Tell us nice things, relate deceptive messages.

The LORD answered,“ If you have raced on foot against men and they have worn you out, how will you be able to compete with horses? And if you feel secure only in safe and open country, how will you manage in the thick undergrowth along the Jordan River?As a matter of fact, even your own brothers and the members of your own family have betrayed you too. Even they have plotted to do away with you. So do not trust them even when they say kind things to you.

“ But you made the Nazirites drink wine; you commanded the prophets,‘ Do not prophesy!’

The rest seized his slaves, insolently mistreated them, and killed them.

Jeremiah had just barely finished saying all the LORD had commanded him to say to all the people. All at once some of the priests, the prophets, and the people grabbed him and shouted,“ You deserve to die!

But the tenants seized his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned another.

And he added,“ I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

“ You stubborn people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, like your ancestors did!Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold long ago the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become!

Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah had heard the things that Jeremiah had been telling the people. They had heard him say,“ The LORD says,‘ Those who stay in this city will die in battle or of starvation or disease. Those who leave the city and surrender to the Babylonians will live. They will escape with their lives.’”They had also heard him say,“ The LORD says,‘ This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon. They will capture it.’”So these officials said to the king,“ This man must be put to death. For he is demoralizing the soldiers who are left in the city as well as all the other people there by these things he is saying. This man is not seeking to help these people but is trying to harm them.”King Zedekiah said to them,“ Very well, you can do what you want with him. For I cannot do anything to stop you.”So the officials took Jeremiah and put him in the cistern of Malkijah, one of the royal princes, that was in the courtyard of the guardhouse. There was no water in the cistern, only mud. So when they lowered Jeremiah into the cistern with ropes he sank in the mud.

“ For this reason I am sending you prophets and wise men and experts in the law, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,so that on you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.I tell you the truth, this generation will be held responsible for all these things!“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!

Now Pashhur son of Immer heard Jeremiah prophesy these things. He was the priest who was chief of security in the LORD’s temple.When he heard Jeremiah’s prophecy, he had the prophet flogged. Then he put him in the stocks which were at the Upper Gate of Benjamin in the LORD’s temple.

For a son thinks his father is a fool, a daughter challenges her mother, and a daughter-in-law her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are his own servants.

“ Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against parents and have them put to death.

“ Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword.For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter- in- law against her mother- in- law,and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household.

Don’t prophesy at Bethel any longer, for a royal temple and palace are here!”Amos replied to Amaziah,“ I was not a prophet by profession. No, I was a herdsman who also took care of sycamore fig trees.Then the LORD took me from tending flocks and gave me this commission,‘ Go! Prophesy to my people Israel!’So now listen to the LORD’s message! You say,‘ Don’t prophesy against Israel! Don’t preach against the family of Isaac!’

‘ Don’t preach with such impassioned rhetoric,’ they say excitedly.‘ These prophets should not preach of such things; we will not be overtaken by humiliation.’Does the family of Jacob say,‘ The LORD’s patience can’t be exhausted– he would never do such things’? To be sure, my commands bring a reward for those who obey them,but you rise up as an enemy against my people. You steal a robe from a friend, from those who pass by peacefully as if returning from a war.You wrongly evict widows among my people from their cherished homes. You defraud their children of their prized inheritance.But you are the ones who will be forced to leave! For this land is not secure! Sin will thoroughly destroy it!If a lying windbag should come and say,‘ I’ll promise you blessings of wine and beer,’ he would be just the right preacher for these people!
