此後比辣多更圖釋之；詎猶太人疾呼曰：『爾釋此人、則不得為凱撒友矣！凡自稱為王者、即與凱撒為敵者也。』

From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting,“ If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”

As a result of this, Pilate made efforts to release Him; but the Jews shouted, saying,“ If you release this Man, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar!”

From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying,“ If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

Upon this Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou release this man, thou art not Cæsar’s friend: every one that maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar.

From that moment Pilate made every effort to release Him. But the Jews shouted,“ If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!”

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

於是彼拉多又進了皇省長府內，叫耶穌來，對他說：『你是猶太人的王？』耶穌回答說：『你說這話，是你自己說的呢？還是別人論到我對你說的？』彼拉多回答說：『難道我是猶太人麼？你本國的人和祭司長們把你送交給我；你作了甚麼事啊？』耶穌回答說：『我的國不屬於這世界。我的國若屬於這世界，給我當差事的就要戰鬥、使我不至於被送交給猶太人了。其實我的國不是出於這裏的。』

過了幾天、腓力斯和他的夫人、猶太的女子土西拉、一同來，就打發人將保羅叫來，聽他講論信基督耶穌的事。保羅辯論到公義、節制、和將來的審判時，腓力斯很覺得懼怕，就應時說：『如今你暫且去，得機會我就打發人去叫你來』。同時腓力斯也指望保羅有錢送給他，因此更常常打發人去叫保羅來和他談論。過了兩年，波求非斯都接了腓力斯的任。腓力斯想要對猶太人作個人情，就將保羅留下，仍然帶着鎖鍊。

開始控告他說：『我們查出這個人扭轉我們民族的心，攔阻人納貢銀給該撒，並說自己是上帝所膏立者，是王。』於是彼拉多問耶穌說：『你是猶太人的王麼？』耶穌回答他說：『你說的是。』彼拉多對祭司長和羣眾說：『我查不出這人有甚麼罪狀。』他們卻越極力地說：『他鼓勵民眾，沿全猶太教訓人，從加利利起，直到這裏了。』

找不着他們，就把耶孫和幾個弟兄拖到眾城官那裏，呼喊着說：『這些攪亂天下的也到這裏來了！耶孫招待他們。這些人都作違背該撒詔諭的事，說另有個人耶穌是王。』

希律聽見了卻說：『是我所斬首的約翰，他活了起來。』原來希律、為了他兄弟腓力的妻子希羅底的緣故（因為他娶了她）、曾差遣人抓住約翰，將他捆着，下在監裏。因為約翰屢次對希律說：『你取了你兄弟的妻子是不合法的。』希羅底逼着他，想要殺他，只是不能。因為希律敬畏約翰，知道他是正義聖潔的人，直保護他。他聽了他，就大大為難，但也喜歡聽他。有個好機會的日子到了：當他生日的時候，希律給他的大官、千夫長、加利利的首領、擺設筵席。希羅底自己的女兒進去跳舞；她得了希律和一同坐席的人的歡心；於是王對閨女說：『凡你所願意的，求我，我就給你。』他並且對她起誓說：『凡你所求的，甚至於我國的一半，我也要給你。』閨女就出來，對她母親說：『我要求甚麼？』她母親說：『施洗約翰的頭。』她隨即趕快進去，到王面前求說：『願王即刻把施洗者約翰的頭放在盤子裏給我。』王很是憂困；只因有了起誓的話和坐席的人，就不好意思辭絕她。
