Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanites were in the land at that time.And the Lord appeared to Abram and said,“ To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.

Now Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan aram, and camped before the city.He bought the plot of land where he had pitched his tent from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of money.Then he erected there an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.

“ When you cross the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.

“ And it shall come about, when the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, that you shall place the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.

But you shall seek the Lord at the place which the Lord your God will choose from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling, and you shall come there.You shall bring there your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the contribution of your hand, your vowed offerings, your voluntary offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock.There you and your households shall eat before the Lord your God, and rejoice in all your undertakings in which the Lord your God has blessed you.“ You shall not do at all what we are doing here today, everyone doing whatever is right in his own eyes;for you have not as yet come to the resting place and the inheritance which the Lord your God is giving you.When you cross the Jordan and live in the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and He gives you rest from all your enemies around you so that you live in security,then it shall come about that the place in which the Lord your God will choose for His name to dwell, there you shall bring everything that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution of your hand, and all your choice vowed offerings which you will vow to the Lord.

Then the Lord appeared to Solomon at night and said to him,“ I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice.

but I have chosen Jerusalem so that My name might be there, and I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’

For the Lord has chosen Zion; He has desired it as His dwelling place.

And all Israel with their elders, officers, and their judges were standing on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, the stranger as well as the native. Half of them stood in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded at first to bless the people of Israel.Then afterward he read all the words of the Law, the blessing and the curse, according to everything that is written in the Book of the Law.There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel with the women, the little ones, and the strangers who were living among them.

And they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.

Then David said,“ This is the house of the Lord God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”

For now I have chosen and consecrated this house so that My name may be there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there always.

Then David built an altar there to the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. And he called to the Lord, and He answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.

But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved.

His foundation is in the holy mountains.The Lord loves the gates of Zion More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob.

So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying,“ The nations whom you have taken into exile and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know the custom of the God of the land; so He has sent lions among them, and behold, they are killing them because they do not know the custom of the God of the land.”Then the king of Assyria issued commands, saying,“ Take one of the priests there whom you led into exile, and have him go and live there; and have him teach them the custom of the God of the land.”So one of the priests whom they had led into exile from Samaria came and lived in Bethel, and taught them how they were to fear the Lord.But every nation was still making gods of its own, and they put them in the houses of the high places which the people of Samaria had made, every nation in their cities in which they lived.The men of Babylon made Succoth benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima,and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites were burning their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.They also feared the Lord and appointed from their entire population priests of the high places, who acted for them in the houses of the high places.They feared the Lord, yet they were serving their own gods in accordance with the custom of the nations from among whom they had been taken into exile.

All the leaders of Shechem and all Beth millo assembled together, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the memorial stone which was in Shechem.Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and raised his voice and called out. And he said to them,“ Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, that God may listen to you.

And the Lord said to him,“ I have heard your prayer and your plea which you have offered before Me; I have consecrated this house which you have built, by putting My name there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there always.
