耶稣知道他们想强行立祂做王，便独自退到山上。傍晚的时候，门徒来到湖边，上了船，去湖对岸的迦百农。天色已暗，耶稣还没到他们那里。忽然，湖面上狂风大作，波涛汹涌。门徒摇橹，大约行了五六公里，突然看见耶稣在水面上朝他们的船走来，他们很害怕。耶稣对他们说：“是我，不要怕。”于是门徒欢然接祂上船，船立刻到了目的地。

随后，耶稣催门徒上船，叫他们先渡到湖对岸的伯赛大，祂则遣散众人。祂辞别了众人后，就上山去祷告。到了晚上，门徒的船在湖中心，耶稣独自留在岸上。大约凌晨三点钟，祂看见门徒在逆风中摇橹，非常吃力，就从水面上朝门徒走去，想要从他们旁边经过。门徒看见有人在湖面上走，以为是幽灵，吓得惊叫起来。全船的人看见祂，都吓坏了，耶稣立刻对他们说：“放心吧，是我，不要怕！”耶稣上了船，来到他们那里，风便停了。门徒心里十分惊奇，因为他们仍然不明白耶稣分饼那件事的意义，心里还是愚顽。

耶稣的弟弟们对祂说：“离开这里，去犹太过节吧，好让你的门徒在那里也看见你所做的啊！因为人想出名，都不会暗地里行事，你既然可以做这些事，就把自己显给世人看吧！”

随后，耶稣催门徒上船，叫他们先渡到湖对岸，祂则遣散众人。待众人都离开了，祂就独自上山去祷告，在那里一直待到晚上。那时，门徒的船离岸已远，遇到逆风，船身被波浪撞击得摇摆不定。天将破晓的时候，耶稣从水面上向门徒走去。门徒看见有人在湖面上走，都吓坏了，说：“是幽灵！”他们害怕得又喊又叫。耶稣立刻对他们说：“放心吧！是我，不要怕。”彼得说：“主啊！如果真的是你，就叫我从水面上走到你那里。”耶稣说：“好，你来吧！”于是，彼得就从船上下去，走在湖面上，要去耶稣那里。他看到风浪很大，就害怕起来，身体开始往下沉，便大喊：“主啊，救我！”耶稣马上伸手拉住他，说：“你信心太小了！为什么怀疑呢？”他们上了船，风浪就平静了。船上的人都敬拜祂，说：“你真是上帝的儿子。”

大家前呼后拥，高声欢呼：“和散那！奉主名来的当受称颂！

“奉主名来的王当受称颂！天上有平安，至高处有荣耀！”

第二天，很多上来过节的人听见耶稣快到耶路撒冷了，就拿着棕树枝出去迎接祂，并且高声欢呼：“和散那！奉主名来的以色列王当受称颂！”那时，耶稣找到一头驴驹，就骑上它，正如圣经记载：“锡安的居民啊，不要害怕！你的君王骑着驴驹来了。”

耶稣到了山上，与门徒一起坐下来。

耶稣却不信任他们，因为祂洞悉万人。不用别人告诉祂，祂也深知人的内心。

受造物在上帝面前都无法隐藏，因为万物都是赤裸裸地暴露在上帝眼前，我们必须向祂交账。
