耶穌回答：「我的國不屬於這個世界。如果我的國屬於這個世界，我的僕人們早就會爭戰，不讓我被交給那些猶太人。但如今，我的國不在這裡。」

耶穌看出他們要來強迫他做王，就又獨自退到山上去了。到了晚上，他的門徒們下到湖邊。他們上了船，開始渡過湖往迦百農去。原來天色已經黑了，而耶穌還沒有來到他們那裡。當時，大風吹起，湖水翻騰。他們已經划了約有四、五公里，看到耶穌在湖面上行走，逐漸向船靠近，他們就感到懼怕。耶穌對他們說：「是我，不要怕！」門徒們這才願意接他上船。船立刻就到了他們所要去的地方。

耶穌隨即催促他的門徒們上船，要他們先往對岸的伯賽達去；這期間，他自己遣散了人群。他告別了他們，就上山去禱告。到了晚上，船在湖中，只有耶穌一個人在岸上。他看見門徒們由於逆風，划船非常艱苦。天快亮的時候，耶穌在湖面上行走，向他們而去，想要從他們旁邊走過去。門徒們看見耶穌在湖面上行走，以為是幽靈，於是喊叫起來，因為他們都看見了他，就驚慌不安。耶穌立刻與他們講話，對他們說：「鼓起勇氣吧！是我，不要怕。」接著，耶穌上了船和他們在一起。這時候風就停了。門徒們心裡感到極其驚訝，因為他們不領悟分餅的事，他們還是硬著心。

耶穌的弟弟們對他說：「你離開這裡到猶太去吧，好讓你的門徒們也能看到你所做的事。因為人不會又想要出名，又在隱祕中做事。你既然要做這些事，就把自己顯明給世人看吧！」

耶穌立刻催促門徒們上船，要他們先往對岸去；這期間，他自己遣散了人群。他遣散了人群以後，就獨自上山去禱告。到了晚上，只有他一個人在那裡。那時，船已經離岸有幾百公尺，由於逆風，被波浪沖擊。天快亮的時候，耶穌在湖面上行走，向他們而去。門徒們看見耶穌在湖面上行走，就驚慌不安，說：「是幽靈！」他們害怕得喊叫起來。耶穌立刻對他們說：「鼓起勇氣吧！是我，不要怕。」彼得對他說：「主啊，如果是你，請吩咐我，從水面上走到你那裡去。」耶穌說：「你來吧！」彼得就從船上下去，在水面上行走向耶穌那裡去。但是，他一看到風極大，就懼怕起來，開始往下沉，於是呼叫說：「主啊，救救我！」耶穌立刻伸手拉住他，說：「小信的人哪，你為什麼疑惑呢？」他們一上船，風就停了。船上的人都拜耶穌，說：「你真是神的兒子！」

前行後隨的人都呼喊：「和散那！奉主名而來的那一位——是蒙祝福的！

說：「奉主名而來的那位君王，是蒙祝福的！在天上有和平，在至高之處有榮耀！」

第二天，一大群上來過節的人聽說耶穌要來到耶路撒冷，就拿著棕櫚樹枝出去迎接他，歡呼說：「和散那！奉主名而來的那一位，以色列的王啊，是蒙祝福的！」耶穌找來一頭驢駒，騎在上面，正如經上所記：「錫安的女兒啊，不要怕！看哪，你的王騎著驢駒來了！」

耶穌上了山，與他的門徒們在那裡坐下。

但耶穌自己卻信不過他們，因為他了解所有的人。他也不需要誰來見證人的事，因為他知道人裡面是什麼。

並且被造之物在神面前，沒有一樣不是顯明的；萬有在他眼前，都是赤裸敞開的；我們都要向他交代。
