But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel, whose origins are in the distant past, will come from you on my behalf.

They said,“ Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say,‘ I came down from heaven’?”

He returned to Nazareth, his hometown. When he taught there in the synagogue, everyone was amazed and said,“ Where does he get this wisdom and the power to do miracles?”Then they scoffed,“ He’s just the carpenter’s son, and we know Mary, his mother, and his brothers— James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas.All his sisters live right here among us. Where did he learn all these things?”And they were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them,“ A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.”

We know God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.”

Others said,“ He is the Messiah.” Still others said,“ But he can’t be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee?For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.”

Then they scoffed,“ He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.

“ In Bethlehem in Judea,” they said,“ for this is what the prophet wrote:‘ And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.’”

Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot— yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.

Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips.“ How can this be?” they asked.“ Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

The people were surprised when they heard him.“ How does he know so much when he hasn’t been trained?” they asked.

He was humiliated and received no justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”

“ For the time is coming,” says the Lord,“ when I will raise up a righteous descendant from King David’s line. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land.

They will have their own ruler again, and he will come from their own people. I will invite him to approach me,” says the Lord,“ for who would dare to come unless invited?

Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people.
