法利賽人斥責他：「你這生來就深陷罪中的傢伙，居然敢教導我們！」於是把他趕了出去。

公會採納了他的意見，於是把使徒召回來打了一頓，再次警告他們不可奉耶穌的名傳道，才放了他們。

事後，有一個名叫約瑟的亞利馬太人請求彼拉多讓他為耶穌收屍。他因為畏懼猶太人，只是暗中做耶穌的門徒。彼拉多批准了，他就把耶穌的遺體領去。

「你們懼怕誰，以致對我說謊，不把我放在心上，忘記我？你們不再敬畏我，是因為我長期沉默嗎？

有個婢女看見彼得坐在火堆邊，打量他一番後，說：「這人是與耶穌一夥的！」彼得卻否認說：「你這女子，我不認識祂。」過了一會兒，又有個人看見了彼得，就說：「你也是跟他們一夥的！」彼得說：「你這人，我不是！」大約一小時之後，又有人指著彼得肯定地說：「這人確實是和耶穌一夥的，因為他也是加利利人。」彼得說：「你這個人，我不知道你在說什麼！」話才出口，雞就叫了。這時，主轉過頭來望著彼得，彼得想起主對他說的話：「明早雞叫之前，你會三次不認我。」

其他人不敢接近他們，不過百姓都很敬重他們。

於是，他們又把使徒傳來，嚴令他們不許再奉耶穌的名講論或傳道。

祭司長和法利賽人看見差役空手回來，就問：「你們為什麼不把祂帶來呢？」差役答道：「從未有人像祂那樣說話！」法利賽人說：「難道你們也被祂迷惑了嗎？哪有官長和法利賽人信祂呢？這群不明白律法的民眾該受咒詛！」曾經夜訪耶穌、屬於他們當中一員的尼哥德慕說：「難道不聽被告申辯，不查明事實真相，我們的律法就定祂的罪嗎？」他們回答說：「難道你也是加利利人嗎？你去查查看，就會知道沒有先知是從加利利來的。」

當天晚上，即週日晚上，門徒因為害怕猶太人，把房門都關上了。忽然，耶穌來了，站在他們當中，對他們說：「願你們平安！」

雖然這樣，仍有很多猶太的官員信了耶穌，只是在法利賽人面前不敢公開承認，因為害怕會被趕出會堂。因為他們愛從世人而來的榮耀，勝過愛從上帝而來的榮耀。

「朋友們，我告訴你們，不要懼怕那些殺害人的身體後再也無計可施的人。我告訴你們應該懼怕誰，要懼怕上帝——祂有權終結人的生命，並把人丟在地獄裡。是的，我告訴你們，要懼怕祂！「五隻麻雀不是只賣兩個銅錢嗎？但上帝連一隻麻雀也不會遺忘。其實就連你們的頭髮都被數過了。不要害怕，你們比許多麻雀要貴重！「我告訴你們，凡在人面前承認我的，人子在上帝的天使面前也必承認他。凡在人面前否認我的，人子在上帝的天使面前也要否認他。

認識公義、銘記我訓誨的人啊，聽我說。你們不要害怕人的辱罵，也不要畏懼他們的譭謗。

後來，彼得到了安提阿，因他做錯了事，我就當面責備他。從雅各那裡來的人還沒有抵達之前，彼得和外族的信徒一起吃飯。但那些人抵達以後，彼得因為怕那些堅持行割禮的猶太人批評，就與外族的信徒分開了。其他的猶太基督徒也跟著彼得裝假，甚至連巴拿巴也隨從了他們的虛偽。

耶和華是我的光，我的拯救，我還怕誰？耶和華是我的堡壘，我還怕誰？當惡人來吞吃我，仇敵來攻擊我時，必失足跌倒。

懼怕人的必自陷網羅，信靠耶和華的必安穩。

耶和華說：「安慰你們的是我，是我。你為什麼要害怕難逃一死、生命如草芥的世人呢？

至於那些膽怯的、不信的、行為可憎的、殺人的、淫亂的、行邪術的、拜偶像的和所有說謊的，他們的結局是被丟進硫磺火湖裡，這就是第二次的死。」
