如爾為義、於彼何加、彼於爾手何所得乎、

如爾為善不倦、於彼無所加、

若爾為善、於天主何益、能使之由爾手有何所得、

If you are righteous, what do you give to him, or what does he receive from your hand?

If you do what is right, how does that help him? What does he get from you?

If you are good, is this some great gift to him? What could you possibly give him?

My soul, you have said to Yahweh,“ You are my Lord. Apart from you I have no good thing.”

If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. If you mock, you alone will bear it.

“ Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself.Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that you are righteous? Or does it benefit him that you make your ways perfect?

Even so you also, when you have done all the things that are commanded you, say,‘ We are unworthy servants. We have done our duty.’”

But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from you, and we have given you of your own.
