I sank down to the bottom of the mountains. I thought I had died and gone down into the grave forever. But you are the Lord my God. You brought my life up from the very edge of the pit of death.

But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.

“ What is gained if I am silenced, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness?

“ Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?“ Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb,when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness,when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place,when I said,‘ This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?

For a fire will be kindled by my wrath, one that burns down to the realm of the dead below. It will devour the earth and its harvests and set afire the foundations of the mountains.

He stood, and shook the earth; he looked, and made the nations tremble. The ancient mountains crumbled and the age- old hills collapsed— but he marches on forever.

You covered it with the watery depths as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains.

the mountains saw you and writhed. Torrents of water swept by; the deep roared and lifted its waves on high.

God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’
