亚伯兰经过那地，到了示剑地方、摩利橡树那里。那时迦南人住在那地。

摩西从以色列人中拣选了有才能的人，立他们为百姓的首领，作千夫长、百夫长、五十夫长、十夫长。他们随时审判百姓，有难断的案件就呈到摩西那里，但各样小事他们自己审判。

耶路巴力的儿子亚比米勒到了示剑见他的众母舅，对他们和他外祖全家的人说：“请你们问示剑的众人说，是耶路巴力的众子七十人都管理你们好呢？还是一人管理你们好呢？你们又要记念我是你们的骨肉。”他的众母舅便将这一切话为他说给示剑人听，示剑人的心就归向亚比米勒。他们说：“他原是我们的弟兄”；

雅各从巴旦亚兰回来的时候，平平安安地到了迦南地的示剑城，在城东支搭帐棚，就用一百块银子向示剑的父亲、哈抹的子孙买了支帐棚的那块地，

他们就把外邦人的神像和他们耳朵上的环子交给雅各；雅各都藏在示剑那里的橡树底下。
