原來基遍人不是以色列人，而是亞摩利人中餘剩的後人。以色列人曾經起誓與他們立約，但掃羅卻為以色列人和猶大人發熱心，設法要擊殺他們。王把基遍人召了來，對他們說話。

除了住在基遍的希未人以外，沒有一座城與以色列人議和的；所有其他的城都是以色列人作戰奪取的。

現在求你們指著耶和華向我起誓：我既然恩待了你們，你們也要恩待我的父家，並且給我一個確實的憑據，放過我的父母、兄弟姊妹和他們所有的一切，救我們的命不致死亡。”兩個探子就對她說：“如果你不洩漏我們這次行動，我們願以性命作你們的保證；耶和華把這地賜給我們的時候，我們必定以慈愛和誠實待你們。”於是，那女人用繩子把二人從窗戶縋下去，因為她的房屋是在城牆上，她就住在城牆上。她對他們二人說：“你們要到山上去，免得追趕的人遇上你們；你們要在那裡躲藏三天，等追趕的人回城，然後你們才可以走你們的路。”他們二人對她說：“如果你不遵照我們的話行，你叫我們起的誓就與我們無關了。你要留意，我們再到這地方的時候，你要把這條朱紅色線繫在你縋我們下去的窗戶上；你也要把你的父母、兄弟和你父的全家，都聚集在你的屋裡。任何人走出你家門，到外面去的，他的血就必歸到他自己的頭上，與我們無關；任何人同你在屋裡的，如果有人下手加害他，他的血就歸到我們頭上。

約書亞對窺探那地的兩個人說：“你們進那妓女的家裡去，照著你們向她所起的誓，把那女人和她所有的一切，都從家裡帶出來。”那兩個年輕密探就進去，把喇合和她的父母、兄弟、她所有的一切，以及她所有的親屬，都領出來，安置在以色列的營外。眾人把城和城中的一切都用火燒了；只有金銀和銅鐵的器皿都放入耶和華聖所的庫房裡。約書亞卻放過妓女喇合和她的父家，以及她所有的一切；她住在以色列中，直到今日，因為她收藏了約書亞派去窺探耶利哥的使者。

不可與他們和他們的神立約。

我甚麼時候宣布要拔出、拆毀、毀滅一邦或一國，如果我論到的那一邦轉離他們的惡行，我就必回心轉意，不把我原定的災禍降給他們。

“你臨近一座城，要攻打那城的時候，要先向那城提和議。如果那城以和平的話回答你，給你開門，城裡所有的人都要給你作苦工，服事你。
