The visions of your prophets were false and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity. The prophecies they gave you were false and misleading.

The visions of your prophets were lies. They weren’t worth anything. They didn’t show you the sins you had committed. So that’s why you were captured. The messages they gave you were lies. They led you astray.

Your prophets have said so many foolish things, false to the core. They did not save you from exile by pointing out your sins. Instead, they painted false pictures, filling you with false hope.

Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying,‘ Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace.

If a man should go about and utter wind and lies, saying,“ I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,” he would be the preacher for this people!

So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your fortune-tellers, or your sorcerers, who are saying to you,‘ You shall not serve the king of Babylon.’For it is a lie that they are prophesying to you, with the result that you will be removed far from your land, and I will drive you out, and you will perish.

Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying,‘ The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land’?

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

Then I said:“ Ah, Lord God, behold, the prophets say to them,‘ You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’”And the Lord said to me:“ The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although I did not send them, and who say,‘ Sword and famine shall not come upon this land’: By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed.

But if they had stood in my council, then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds.

Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men; her priests profane what is holy; they do violence to the law.

“ Both prophet and priest are ungodly; even in my house I have found their evil, declares the Lord.Therefore their way shall be to them like slippery paths in the darkness, into which they shall be driven and fall, for I will bring disaster upon them in the year of their punishment, declares the Lord.In the prophets of Samaria I saw an unsavory thing: they prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray.But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies; they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his evil; all of them have become like Sodom to me, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets:“ Behold, I will feed them with bitter food and give them poisoned water to drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has gone out into all the land.”Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying,‘ I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart,who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal?Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord.Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Because you have disheartened the righteous falsely, although I have not grieved him, and you have encouraged the wicked, that he should not turn from his evil way to save his life,

“ Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel, who are prophesying, and say to those who prophesy from their own hearts:‘ Hear the word of the Lord!’Thus says the Lord God, Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!Your prophets have been like jackals among ruins, O Israel.You have not gone up into the breaches, or built up a wall for the house of Israel, that it might stand in battle in the day of the Lord.They have seen false visions and lying divinations. They say,‘ Declares the Lord,’ when the Lord has not sent them, and yet they expect him to fulfill their word.Have you not seen a false vision and uttered a lying divination, whenever you have said,‘ Declares the Lord,’ although I have not spoken?”Therefore thus says the Lord God:“ Because you have uttered falsehood and seen lying visions, therefore behold, I am against you, declares the Lord God.My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who give lying divinations. They shall not be in the council of my people, nor be enrolled in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord God.Precisely because they have misled my people, saying,‘ Peace,’ when there is no peace, and because, when the people build a wall, these prophets smear it with whitewash,say to those who smear it with whitewash that it shall fall! There will be a deluge of rain, and you, O great hailstones, will fall, and a stormy wind break out.And when the wall falls, will it not be said to you,‘ Where is the coating with which you smeared it?’Therefore thus says the Lord God: I will make a stormy wind break out in my wrath, and there shall be a deluge of rain in my anger, and great hailstones in wrath to make a full end.And I will break down the wall that you have smeared with whitewash, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation will be laid bare. When it falls, you shall perish in the midst of it, and you shall know that I am the Lord.Thus will I spend my wrath upon the wall and upon those who have smeared it with whitewash, and I will say to you, The wall is no more, nor those who smeared it,the prophets of Israel who prophesied concerning Jerusalem and saw visions of peace for her, when there was no peace, declares the Lord God.

For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream,for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, declares the Lord.

But‘ the burden of the Lord’ you shall mention no more, for the burden is every man’s own word, and you pervert the words of the living God, the Lord of hosts, our God.

the elder and honored man is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;for those who guide this people have been leading them astray, and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.

And Jeremiah the prophet said to the prophet Hananiah,“ Listen, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie.
