The visions of your prophets were false and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity. The prophecies they gave you were false and misleading.

The visions of your prophets were lies. They weren’t worth anything. They didn’t show you the sins you had committed. So that’s why you were captured. The messages they gave you were lies. They led you astray.

Your prophets have seen for you false and deceptive visions; they have not exposed your iniquity to restore your fortunes, but have seen for you oracles that are false and misleading.

Your prophets have said so many foolish things, false to the core. They did not save you from exile by pointing out your sins. Instead, they painted false pictures, filling you with false hope.

The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule on their own authority; And My people love it this way! But what will you do when the end comes?

“ Cry loudly, do not hold back; Raise your voice like a trumpet, And declare to My people their wrongdoing, And to the house of Jacob their sins.

And her prophets have coated with whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying,‘ This is what the Lord God says,’ when the Lord has not spoken.

There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst like a roaring lion tearing the prey. They have devoured lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in the midst of her.

This is what the Lord says concerning the prophets who lead my people astray: When they have something to bite with their teeth, They cry out,“ Peace!” But against him who puts nothing in their mouths They declare holy war.Therefore it will be night for you— without vision, And darkness for you— without divination. The sun will go down on the prophets, And the day will become dark over them.The seers will be put to shame, And the diviners will be ashamed. Indeed, they will all cover their lips Because there is no answer from God.

The priests did not say,‘ Where is the Lord?’ And those who handle the Law did not know Me; The rulers also revolted against Me, And the prophets prophesied by Baal And walked after things that were of no benefit.

Therefore I will give their wives to others, Their fields to new owners; Because from the least even to the greatest Everyone is greedy for gain; From the prophet even to the priest, Everyone practices deceit.They have healed the brokenness of the daughter of My people superficially, Saying,‘ Peace, peace,’ But there is no peace.

If someone walking after wind and falsehood Had lied and said,‘ I will prophesy to you about wine and liquor,’ He would become a prophet to this people.

And as for you, do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers who talk to you, saying,“ You will not serve the king of Babylon.”For they are prophesying a lie to you in order to remove you far from your land; and I will drive you away and you will perish.

Behold, I am against the prophets,” declares the Lord,“ who use their tongues and declare,‘ The Lord declares!’Behold, I am against those who have prophesied false dreams,” declares the Lord,“ and reported them and led My people astray by their lies and reckless boasting; yet I did not send them nor command them, nor do they provide this people the slightest benefit,” declares the Lord.“ Now when this people or the prophet or a priest asks you, saying,‘ What is the pronouncement of the Lord?’ then you shall say to them,‘ What pronouncement?’ The Lord declares,‘ I will abandon you.’Then as for the prophet or the priest or the people who say,‘ The pronouncement of the Lord,’ I will bring punishment upon that person and his household.

And where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying,‘ The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?

But false prophets also appeared among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.Many will follow their indecent behavior, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned;and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

But I said,“ Oh, Lord God! Behold, the prophets are telling them,‘ You will not see a sword, nor will you have famine; on the contrary, I will give you lasting peace in this place.’ ”Then the Lord said to me,“ The prophets are prophesying falsehood in My name. I have neither sent them nor commanded them, nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, futility, and the deception of their own minds.Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the prophets who are prophesying in My name, although it was not I who sent them— yet they keep saying:‘ There will be no sword or famine in this land’— by sword and famine those prophets shall meet their end!

But if they had stood in My council, Then they would have announced My words to My people, And would have turned them back from their evil way And from the evil of their deeds.

Her prophets are insolent, treacherous men; Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the Law.

“ For both prophet and priest are defiled; Even in My house I have found their wickedness,” declares the Lord.“ Therefore their way will be like slippery paths to them, They will be driven away into the gloom and fall down in it; For I will bring disaster upon them, The year of their punishment,” declares the Lord.“ Moreover, among the prophets of Samaria I saw an offensive thing: They prophesied by Baal and led My people Israel astray.Also among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: The committing of adultery and walking in deceit; And they strengthen the hands of evildoers, So that no one has turned back from his wickedness. All of them have become to Me like Sodom, And her inhabitants like Gomorrah.Therefore this is what the Lord of armies says concerning the prophets:‘ Behold, I am going to feed them wormwood And make them drink poisonous water, For from the prophets of Jerusalem Ungodliness has spread into all the land.’ ”This is what the Lord of armies says:“ Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are prophesying to you. They are leading you into futility; They tell a vision of their own imagination, Not from the mouth of the Lord.They keep saying to those who despise Me,‘ The Lord has said,“ You will have peace” ’; And as for everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart, They say,‘ Disaster will not come on you.’

“ I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy falsely in My name, saying,‘ I had a dream, I had a dream!’How long? Is there anything in the hearts of the prophets who prophesy falsehood, these prophets of the deceitfulness of their own heart,who intend to make My people forget My name by their dreams which they report to one another, just as their fathers forgot My name because of Baal?The prophet who has a dream may report his dream, but let him who has My word speak My word truthfully. What does straw have in common with grain?” declares the Lord.“ Is My word not like fire?” declares the Lord,“ and like a hammer which shatters a rock?

Because you disheartened the righteous with falsehood when I did not cause him pain, but you have encouraged the wicked not to turn from his wicked way to keep him alive,

“ Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesy, and say to those who prophesy from their own inspiration,‘ Listen to the word of the Lord!This is what the Lord God says:“ Woe to the foolish prophets who are following their own spirit and have seen nothing!Israel, your prophets have been like jackals among ruins.You have not gone up into the breaches, nor did you build up a stone wall around the house of Israel to stand in the battle on the day of the Lord.They see deceit and lying divination, those who are saying,‘ The Lord declares,’ when the Lord has not sent them; yet they wait for the fulfillment of their word!Did you not see a false vision and tell a lying divination when you said,‘ The Lord declares,’ but it is not I who have spoken?” ’ ”Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:“ Because you have spoken deceit and have seen a lie, therefore behold, I am against you,” declares the Lord God.“ So My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will have no place in the council of My people, nor will they be written down in the register of the house of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel, so that you may know that I am the Lord God.It is definitely because they have misled My people by saying,‘ Peace!’ when there is no peace. And when anyone builds a wall, behold, they plaster it over with whitewash;so tell those who plaster it over with whitewash, that it will fall. A flooding rain will come, and you, hailstones, will fall, and a violent wind will break out.Behold, when the wall has fallen, will you not be asked,‘ Where is the plaster with which you plastered it?’ ”Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:“ I will make a violent wind break out in My wrath. There will also be in My anger a flooding rain and hailstones to consume it in wrath.So I will tear down the wall which you plastered over with whitewash and hurl it down to the ground, so that its foundation is exposed; and when it falls, you will perish in its midst. And you will know that I am the Lord.So I will expend My wrath on the wall and on those who have plastered it over with whitewash; and I will say to you,‘ The wall is gone and those who plastered it are gone,along with the prophets of Israel who prophesy to Jerusalem, and who see a vision of peace for her when there is no peace,’ declares the Lord God.

For this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says:‘ Do not let your prophets who are in your midst or your diviners deceive you, and do not listen to their interpretations of your dreams which you dream.For they prophesy falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them,’ declares the Lord.

For you will no longer remember the pronouncement of the Lord, because every person’s own word will become the pronouncement, and you have perverted the words of the living God, the Lord of armies, our God.

So do not listen to the words of the prophets who talk to you, saying,‘ You will not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they are prophesying a lie to you;for I have not sent them,” declares the Lord,“ but they are prophesying falsely in My name, so that I will drive you away and that you will perish, you and the prophets who prophesy to you.”Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying:“ This is what the Lord says:‘ Do not listen to the words of your prophets who prophesy to you, saying,“ Behold, the vessels of the Lord’s house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon”; for they are prophesying a lie to you.

“ For from the least of them to the greatest of them, Everyone is greedy for gain, And from the prophet to the priest Everyone deals falsely.They have healed the brokenness of My people superficially, Saying,‘ Peace, peace,’ But there is no peace.

The head is the elder and esteemed man, And the prophet who teaches falsehood is the tail.For those who guide this people are leading them astray; And those who are guided by them are confused.

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet,“ Listen now, Hananiah: the Lord has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie.
