One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain.

One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat.But the Pharisees said to Jesus,“ Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”Jesus said to them,“ Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?He went into the house of God( during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.”Then Jesus said to them,“ The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”

At about that time Jesus was walking through some grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, so they began breaking off some heads of grain and eating them.But some Pharisees saw them do it and protested,“ Look, your disciples are breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath.”Jesus said to them,“ Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?He went into the house of God, and he and his companions broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat.And haven’t you read in the law of Moses that the priests on duty in the Temple may work on the Sabbath?I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple!But you would not have condemned my innocent disciples if you knew the meaning of this Scripture:‘ I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”

On the first day of the festival, all the people must stop their ordinary work and observe an official day for holy assembly.

“ Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. When you enter the land I am giving you and you harvest its first crops, bring the priest a bundle of grain from the first cutting of your grain harvest.On the day after the Sabbath, the priest will lift it up before the Lord so it may be accepted on your behalf.

For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast. On the first day of the festival, remove every trace of yeast from your homes. Anyone who eats bread made with yeast during the seven days of the festival will be cut off from the community of Israel.

“ From the day after the Sabbath— the day you bring the bundle of grain to be lifted up as a special offering— count off seven full weeks.

“ Count off seven weeks from when you first begin to cut the grain at the time of harvest.
