Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god.

And Judah has been unfaithful. A hateful thing has been done in Israel and Jerusalem. The Lord loves his temple. But Judah has made it impure. Their men have married women who worship other gods.

Now when these things had been completed, the leaders approached me and said,“ The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the local residents who practice detestable things similar to those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.Indeed, they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has become intermingled with the local residents. Worse still, the leaders and the officials have been at the forefront of all of this!”

They took the Canaanites’ daughters as wives and gave their daughters to the Canaanites; they worshiped their gods as well.

Then you come and stand in my presence in this temple I have claimed as my own and say,“ We are safe!” You think you are so safe that you go on doing all those hateful sins!

Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, from the descendants of Elam, addressed Ezra:“ We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the local peoples. Nonetheless, there is still hope for Israel in this regard.

You must not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,for they will turn your sons away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will erupt against you and he will quickly destroy you.Instead, this is what you must do to them: You must tear down their altars, shatter their sacred pillars, cut down their sacred Asherah poles, and burn up their idols.For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. He has chosen you to be his people, prized above all others on the face of the earth.

And now, if you will diligently listen to me and keep my covenant, then you will be my special possession out of all the nations, for all the earth is mine,and you will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites.”

Also in those days I saw the men of Judah who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod( or the language of one of the other peoples mentioned) and were unable to speak the language of Judah.So I entered a complaint with them. I called down a curse on them, and I struck some of the men and pulled out their hair. I had them swear by God saying,“ You will not marry off your daughters to their sons, and you will not take any of their daughters as wives for your sons or for yourselves!Was it not because of things like these that King Solomon of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him. He was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. But the foreign wives made even him sin!Should we then in your case hear that you do all this great evil, thereby being unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign wives?”Now one of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. So I banished him from my sight.Please remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, the covenant of the priesthood, and the Levites.

Therefore do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons, and do not take their daughters in marriage for your sons. Do not ever seek their peace or welfare, so that you may be strong and may eat the good of the land and may leave it as an inheritance for your children forever.’

They did not destroy the nations, as the LORD had commanded them to do.They mixed in with the nations and learned their ways.They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.They shed innocent blood– the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan. The land was polluted by bloodshed.They were defiled by their deeds, and unfaithful in their actions.

One commits an abominable act with his neighbor’s wife; another obscenely defiles his daughter-in-law; another violates his sister– his father’s daughter– within you.

But to the cowards, unbelievers, detestable persons, murderers, the sexually immoral, and those who practice magic spells, idol worshipers, and all those who lie, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. That is the second death.”

Yet even after she had done all that, I thought that she might come back to me. But she did not. Her sister, unfaithful Judah, saw what she did.She also saw that I gave wayward Israel her divorce papers and sent her away because of her adulterous worship of other gods. Even after her unfaithful sister Judah had seen this, she still was not afraid, and she too went and gave herself like a prostitute to other gods.Because she took her prostitution so lightly, she defiled the land through her adulterous worship of gods made of wood and stone.

There is no one like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the sky to help you, on the clouds in majesty.The everlasting God is a refuge, and underneath you are his eternal arms; he has driven out enemies before you, and has said,“ Destroy!”Israel lives in safety, the fountain of Jacob is quite secure, in a land of grain and new wine; indeed, its heavens rain down dew.You have joy, Israel! Who is like you? You are a people delivered by the LORD, your protective shield and your exalted sword. May your enemies cringe before you; may you trample on their backs.

“‘ Do not defile yourselves with any of these things, for the nations which I am about to drive out before you have been defiled with all these things.Therefore the land has become unclean and I have brought the punishment for its iniquity upon it, so that the land has vomited out its inhabitants.You yourselves must obey my statutes and my regulations and must not do any of these abominations, both the native citizen and the resident foreigner in your midst,for the people who were in the land before you have done all these abominations, and the land has become unclean.So do not make the land vomit you out because you defile it just as it has vomited out the nations that were before you.For if anyone does any of these abominations, the persons who do them will be cut off from the midst of their people.You must obey my charge to not practice any of the abominable statutes that have been done before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them. I am the LORD your God.’”

King Solomon fell in love with many foreign women( besides Pharaoh’s daughter), including Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites.They came from nations about which the LORD had warned the Israelites,“ You must not establish friendly relations with them! If you do, they will surely shift your allegiance to their gods.” But Solomon was irresistibly attracted to them.He had 700 royal wives and 300 concubines; his wives had a powerful influence over him.When Solomon became old, his wives shifted his allegiance to other gods; he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the LORD his God, as his father David had been.Solomon worshiped the Sidonian goddess Astarte and the detestable Ammonite god Milcom.Solomon did evil in the LORD’s sight; he did not remain loyal to the LORD, like his father David had.Furthermore, on the hill east of Jerusalem Solomon built a high place for the detestable Moabite god Chemosh and for the detestable Ammonite god Milcom.He built high places for all his foreign wives so they could burn incense and make sacrifices to their gods.

At Adam they broke the covenant; Oh how they were unfaithful to me!

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. He has chosen you to be his people, prized above all others on the face of the earth.

You must be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the other peoples to be mine.

I planted you in the land like a special vine of the very best stock. Why in the world have you turned into something like a wild vine that produces rotten, foul-smelling grapes?You can try to wash away your guilt with a strong detergent. You can use as much soap as you want. But the stain of your guilt is still there for me to see,” says the Lord GOD.

Israel was set apart to the LORD; they were like the first fruits of a harvest to him. All who tried to devour them were punished; disaster came upon them,” says the LORD.’”

When humankind began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,the sons of God saw that the daughters of humankind were beautiful. Thus they took wives for themselves from any they chose.
