Behold, the sower went out to sow;as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up.Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil.And when the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it yielded no crop.Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundred times as much.”And He was saying,“ He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

When Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there.

And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the people, for they understood that He told the parable against them. And so they left Him and went away.

And with many such parables He was speaking the word to them, so far as they were able to understand it;

And He* said to them,“ Do you not understand this parable? How will you understand all the parables?

Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And he came to him and said,“ There were two men in a city, the one wealthy and the other poor.The wealthy man had a great many flocks and herds.But the poor man had nothing at all except one little ewe lamb Which he bought and nurtured; And it grew up together with him and his children. It would eat scraps from him and drink from his cup and lie in his lap, And was like a daughter to him.Now a visitor came to the wealthy man, And he could not bring himself to take any animal from his own flock or his own herd, To prepare for the traveler who had come to him; So he took the poor man’s ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”Then David’s anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan,“ As the Lord lives, the man who has done this certainly deserves to die!So he must make restitution for the lamb four times over, since he did this thing and had no compassion.”Nathan then said to David,“ You yourself are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says:‘ It is I who anointed you as king over Israel, and it is I who rescued you from the hand of Saul.

All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak anything to them without a parable.This was so that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled:“ I will open My mouth in parables; I will proclaim things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

“ The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the sky ate it up.Other seed fell on rocky soil, and when it came up, it withered away because it had no moisture.Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out.And yet other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as much.” As He said these things, He would call out,“ The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

And the disciples came up and said to Him,“ Why do You speak to them in parables?”And Jesus answered them,“ To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted.For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

Then I said,“ Oh, Lord God! They are saying of me,‘ Is he not just speaking in riddles?’ ”

“ Now learn the parable from the fig tree: as soon as its branch has become tender and sprouts its leaves, you know that summer is near;

On that day they will take up against you a song of mocking And utter a song of mourning and say,‘ We are completely destroyed! He exchanges the share of my people; How He removes it from me! To the apostate He apportions our fields.’

Peter said,“ Lord, are You telling this parable to us, or to everyone else as well?”

Once the trees went to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree,‘ Reign over us!’But the olive tree said to them,‘ Shall I give up my fatness with which God and mankind are honored, and go to wave over the trees?’Then the trees said to the fig tree,‘ You, come, reign over us!’But the fig tree said to them,‘ Shall I give up my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to wave over the trees?’Then the trees said to the vine,‘ You, come, reign over us!’But the vine said to them,‘ Shall I give up my new wine, which cheers God and mankind, and go to wave over the trees?’Then all the trees said to the bramble,‘ You, come, reign over us!’And the bramble said to the trees,‘ If you really are anointing me as king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, may fire come out of the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’“ Now then, if you have acted with honesty and integrity in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have dealt with him as he deserved—for my father fought for you, and risked his life and saved you from the hand of Midian;but in fact you have risen against my father’s house today and have killed his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female slave, king over the leaders of Shechem, because he is your relative—so if you have acted with honesty and integrity toward Jerubbaal and his house this day, be joyful about Abimelech, and may he also be joyful about you.But if not, may fire come out of Abimelech and consume the leaders of Shechem and Beth millo; and may fire come out of the leaders of Shechem and from Beth millo, and consume Abimelech.”

And He built a tower in the middle of it, And also carved out a wine vat in it; Then He expected it to produce good grapes, But it produced only worthless ones.“ And now, you inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, Judge between Me and My vineyard.What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected it to produce good grapes did it produce worthless ones?So now let Me tell you what I am going to do to My vineyard: I will remove its hedge and it will be consumed; I will break down its wall and it will become trampled ground.I will lay it waste; It will not be pruned nor hoed, But briars and thorns will come up. I will also command the clouds not to rain on it.”For the vineyard of the Lord of armies is the house of Israel, And the people of Judah are His delightful plant. So He waited for justice, but behold, there was bloodshed; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

“ These things I have spoken to you in figures of speech; an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

And so He told them this parable, saying,“ What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the other ninety nine in the open pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?And when he has found it, he puts it on his shoulders, rejoicing.And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them,‘ Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost!’I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

And so He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables:“ How can Satan cast out Satan?

And He began to speak to them in parables:“ A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it, and dug a vat under the wine press and built a tower, and leased it to vine growers and went on a journey.

Present a parable to the rebellious house and say to them,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Put on the pot, put it on and also pour water into it;Put in it the pieces of meat, Every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder; Fill it with choice bones.Take the choicest of the flock, And also stack wood under the pot. Make it boil vigorously. Also boil its bones in it.”‘ Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:“ Woe to the bloody city, To the pot in which there is rust And whose rust has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, Without making a choice.For her blood is in her midst; She placed it on the bare rock; She did not pour it on the ground To cover it with dust.So that it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance, I have put her blood on the bare rock, So that it will not be covered.”Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:“ Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the wood pile great.Heap on the wood, kindle the fire, Cook the meat thoroughly And mix in the spices, And let the bones be burned up.Then set it empty on its burning coals So that it may be hot And its bronze may glow, And its filthiness may be melted in it, Its rust eliminated.She has wearied Me with work, Yet her great rust has not gone from her; Let her rust be in the fire!In your filthiness is outrageous sin. Because I would have cleansed you, Yet you are not clean, You will not be cleansed from your filthiness again Until I have expended My wrath on you.I, the Lord, have spoken; it is coming and I will act. I will not overlook, I will not pity, and I will not be sorry; according to your ways and according to your deeds I will judge you,” declares the Lord God.’ ”

Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying,

And He said,“ To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest they are told in parables, so that while seeing they may not see, and while hearing they may not understand.

I will open my mouth in a parable; I will tell riddles of old,

I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will express my riddle on the harp.

“ Son of man, ask a riddle and present a parable to the house of Israel,

“ Will all of these not take up a song of ridicule against him, Even a saying and insinuations against him And say,‘ Woe to him who increases what is not his— For how long— And makes himself rich with debts!’
