其中有一個人叫該亞法，是當年的大祭司，對他們說：「你們什麼都不懂！

那時，大祭司盤問耶穌有關他的門徒和他教導的事。耶穌回答他：「我一向公開地對世人講話。我總是在會堂和聖殿，就是所有猶太人聚集的地方教導人。我沒有在隱祕中講過什麼。你為什麼問我呢？你可以去問那些聽見過的人，我對他們講了什麼。你看，我所說的，那些人都知道。」耶穌說了這些話，站在旁邊的一個差役就打了他一巴掌，說：「你這樣回答大祭司嗎？」耶穌回答他：「如果我說得不對，你可以見證哪裡不對；如果說得對，你為什麼打我呢？」那時候耶穌仍然被捆綁，亞納把他押送到大祭司該亞法那裡去。

於是那隊士兵和千夫長，以及猶太人的差役們，抓住耶穌，把他捆綁起來，先帶到亞納面前，因為亞納是當年的大祭司該亞法的岳父。該亞法就是曾經向那些猶太人建議「一個人替民眾死是有益處的」那個人。

他們把耶穌帶到大祭司那裡。所有的祭司長、長老和經文士都聚在一起。彼得遠遠地跟著耶穌，直到進了大祭司的院子裡。他與差役們一起坐在火邊取暖。當時，祭司長們和全議會的人為了要處死耶穌，都在尋找證據來控告他。可是他們找不出什麼。許多人做偽證誣告他，可是這些證詞互相矛盾。有一些人站起來做偽證控告他，說：「我們聽他說過『我要拆毀這座人手所造的聖所，三天內另建一座不是人手所造的。』」可是他們這個證詞也是互相矛盾的。於是大祭司就起來站到中間問耶穌，說：「對這些人控告你的事，你什麼都不回應嗎？」耶穌沉默不語，什麼也不回答。大祭司又問他，說：「你是基督——那當受頌讚者的兒子嗎？」耶穌說：「我就是。而且你們將看見人子坐在全能者的右邊，在天上的雲彩中來臨。」大祭司就撕裂自己的衣服，說：「難道我們還需要什麼見證人嗎？你們都聽見了這褻瀆的話。你們怎麼看？」他們都判定他是該死的。接著，有些人開始向他吐唾沫，蒙住他的臉，用拳頭打他，對他說：「你說預言吧！」差役們也用手掌打他。
