如果主不缩短灾期，恐怕没有人能活命，但为了祂所拣选的子民，祂已经缩短灾期。

主若不減其時日、則血氣之倫、將無遺孑！惟為選民之故、主必減之耳。

耶和华说：“人发现一串葡萄尚可酿造新酒时，一定会说，‘不要毁坏它，里面还有好葡萄。’同样，因我仆人的缘故，我也不会把他们全部毁灭。“我必使雅各的后裔兴起，使犹大人兴起，继承我的群山。我拣选的子民必拥有那片土地，我的仆人必在那里安居。

如果不缩短灾期，恐怕没有人能活命。但为了选民的缘故，灾期必被缩短。

就福音而论，他们成为上帝的仇敌是为了使你们得到福音；就上帝的拣选而论，因为他们祖先的缘故，他们仍是上帝所爱的。因为上帝绝不会收回祂的恩赐和呼召。你们从前不顺服上帝，然而因为他们的不顺服，你们现在反蒙了怜悯。同样，他们现在不顺服是为了使你们蒙怜悯，好使他们也蒙怜悯。因为上帝把世人都归在不顺服之列，是为了要怜悯世人。

地上三分之二的人必遭铲除、毁灭，只剩下三分之一的人存活。这是耶和华说的。我必使这三分之一的人受到火一般的考验；我必像熬炼银子一样熬炼他们，像试炼金子一样试炼他们。他们必呼求我的名，我必回应他们。我必说，‘这是我的子民。’他们必说，‘耶和华是我们的上帝。’”

即使境内只剩下十分之一的人，也必被消灭。然而，就像砍掉松树和橡树后必留下树墩，这地方必有圣洁的苗裔存留下来。”

当然，如果以色列人不再顽固不信，必会重新被接上去，因为上帝能把他们重新接上。你这从野生的橄榄树上砍下来的枝子，尚且可以违反自然，被接到好橄榄树上，何况原来的枝子被接回到原来的树上呢？

现在的情况也是一样，上帝按照拣选的恩典留下了少数人。既然说是出于恩典，就不再基于行为，不然恩典就不再是恩典了。这该怎么说呢？以色列人努力追求，却一无所得，只有蒙拣选的人得到了，其他的人都变得顽固不化。

若不是万军之耶和华让我们一些人存活，我们早就像所多玛和蛾摩拉一样灭亡了。
