He said to them,“ Don’t you understand this parable? Then how will you understand any parable?

Then Jesus said to them,“ Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable?

All those I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent!

“ Have you understood all these things?” They replied,“ Yes.”Then he said to them,“ Therefore every expert in the law who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his treasure what is new and old.”

On this topic we have much to say and it is difficult to explain, since you have become sluggish in hearing.For though you should in fact be teachers by this time, you need someone to teach you the beginning elements of God’s utterances. You have gone back to needing milk, not solid food.For everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced in the message of righteousness, because he is an infant.But solid food is for the mature, whose perceptions are trained by practice to discern both good and evil.

When Jesus learned of this, he said,“ You who have such little faith! Why are you arguing among yourselves about having no bread?Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

Now when Jesus had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable.He said to them,“ Are you so foolish? Don’t you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him?

So he said to them,“ You foolish people– how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

“ Now the parable means this: The seed is the word of God.Those along the path are the ones who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in a time of testing fall away.As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.But as for the seed that landed on good soil, these are the ones who, after hearing the word, cling to it with an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with steadfast endurance.

But Peter said to him,“ Explain this parable to us.”Jesus said,“ Even after all this, are you still so foolish?Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer?

So, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but instead as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.I fed you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready. In fact, you are still not ready,

“ So listen to the parable of the sower:When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches what was sown in his heart; this is the seed sown along the path.The seed sown on rocky ground is the person who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy.But he has no root in himself and does not endure; when trouble or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he falls away.The seed sown among thorns is the person who hears the word, but worldly cares and the seductiveness of wealth choke the word, so it produces nothing.But as for the seed sown on good soil, this is the person who hears the word and understands. He bears fruit, yielding a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown.”
