但那些想要發財的人，就落在試探中和陷阱裡；又落在許多無知而有害的私慾裡，使人沉淪在敗壞和滅亡中；因為貪財是萬惡之根。有人貪愛錢財，就被引誘離開真道，用許多痛苦把自己刺透了。

你要囑咐那些今世富有的人，叫他們不要心高氣傲，也不要寄望在浮動的財富上，卻要仰望那厚賜百物給我們享用的神。

不要愛世界和世上的東西。人若愛世界，愛父的心就不在他裡面了。原來世上的一切，就如肉體的私慾，眼目的私慾和今生的驕傲，都不是出於父，而是從世界來的。這世界和世上的私慾都要漸漸過去，但那遵行神旨意的卻存到永遠。

好叫你們不再隨從人的私慾，只順從神的旨意，在世上度餘下的光陰。因為你們過去隨從教外人的心意，行邪淫、私慾、醉酒、荒宴、狂飲和可憎拜偶像的事，時候已經夠了。

應當毫無憂慮，只要凡事藉著禱告祈求，帶著感恩的心，把你們所要的告訴神。

耶穌對門徒說：“我實在告訴你們，有錢的人是很難進天國的。

你們不要求吃甚麼，喝甚麼，也不要憂慮，因為這一切都是世上不信的人所尋求的。你們的父原知道你們需要這一切。

“你們應當自己小心，免得在貪食醉酒和生活的掛慮壓住你們的心的時候，那日子突然臨到你們，

所有屬我而不結果子的枝子，他就剪去；所有結果子的，他就修剪乾淨，讓它結更多的果子。

我為我的葡萄園所作的以外，還有甚麼要作的呢？我期望它結出好葡萄，它為甚麼倒結出野葡萄呢？

他把園子的泥土挖鬆了，撿去石頭，栽種了上好的葡萄樹；在園中建造了一座守望樓，又鑿了一個榨酒池。他期望結出好葡萄，卻結出野葡萄。

貪愛銀子的，不因有銀子滿足；貪愛財富的，也不因得利知足。這也是虛空。財物增加，吃用的人也增加，物主除了眼看以外，還有甚麼益處呢？勞力的人無論吃多吃少，都睡得甜；財主的豐足，卻不容他安睡。我看見日光之下有一令人痛心的憾事，就是財主積聚財富，反受其害。遭遇禍患，財富就盡失；他即使生了兒子，也沒有甚麼留給他。他怎樣從母胎赤身而來，也必怎樣赤身而去；在勞碌中得來的，他的手也帶不走甚麼。他怎樣來，也要怎樣去，這也是令人痛心的憾事；他為風勞碌，有甚麼益處呢？

他自己心裡說：‘怎麼辦呢？因為我沒有足夠的地方收藏出產了！’又說：‘我要這樣辦：我要拆掉這些倉房，建造更大的，好在那裡收藏我的一切糧食和貨物。然後，我要對我的靈魂說：靈魂啊，你擁有許多好東西，足夠多年享用，只管安安逸逸地吃喝快樂吧！’神卻對他說：‘無知的人哪，今天晚上，你的靈魂必被取去，你所預備的要歸給誰呢？’凡為自己積財，在神面前卻不富足的，也是這樣。”

主回答她：“馬大，馬大，你為許多事操心忙碌，

有人孤單無依，沒有兒子，沒有兄弟，仍勞碌不休，眼目也不以自己的財富為足。他問：“我勞勞碌碌，刻薄自己不去享受，是為誰呢？”這也是虛空，是勞苦的擔子。

你的眼睛注視在錢財上，錢財卻不見了，因為錢財必長起翅膀，如鷹飛往天上。

因為你們有了這幾樣，並且繼續增長，就必叫你們在確實認識我們的主耶穌基督上，不至於閒懶不結果子。

眾人一致推辭，頭一個說：‘我買了一塊地，不得不去看一看，請原諒我。’另一個說：‘我買了五對牛，要去試一試，請原諒我。’又一個說：‘我剛結了婚，不能去。’

這些人膽敢與你們同席，他們只顧餵飽（“餵飽”或譯：“牧養”）自己，是你們愛筵中的暗礁；是無雨的浮雲，隨風飄蕩；是秋天不結果子的樹，連根拔起，死而又死；

現在斧頭已經放在樹根上，所有不結好果子的樹，就砍下來，丟在火裡。

因為底馬貪愛現今的世界，就離棄我到帖撒羅尼迦去了。革勒士去了加拉太，提多去了達馬太。

這就像一塊地，吸收了常常下在它上面的雨水，如果長出對種植的人有用的菜蔬，就從神那裡得福。但如果這塊地長出荊棘和蒺藜來，就被廢棄，近於咒詛，結局就是焚燒。
