They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them,

They refused to listen to you. They forgot the miracles you had done among them. So they became stubborn. When they refused to obey you, they appointed a leader for themselves. They wanted to go back to being slaves in Egypt. But you are a God who forgives. You are gracious. You are tender and kind. You are slow to get angry. You are full of love. So you didn’t desert them.

They forgot what he had done— the great wonders he had shown them,

O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.

But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.

They did not remember his power and how he rescued them from their enemies.They did not remember his miraculous signs in Egypt, his wonders on the plain of Zoan.

Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.“ My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.“ And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

Yet how quickly they forgot what he had done! They wouldn’t wait for his counsel!

Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.

Again and again he rescued them, but they chose to rebel against him, and they were finally destroyed by their sin.Even so, he pitied them in their distress and listened to their cries.He remembered his covenant with them and relented because of his unfailing love.He even caused their captors to treat them with kindness.

Yet he was merciful and forgave their sins and did not destroy them all. Many times he held back his anger and did not unleash his fury!

The people refused to enter the pleasant land, for they wouldn’t believe his promise to care for them.Instead, they grumbled in their tents and refused to obey the Lord.

Our ancestors in Egypt were not impressed by the Lord’s miraculous deeds. They soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them. Instead, they rebelled against him at the Red Sea.

‘ The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty. He lays the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.’In keeping with your magnificent, unfailing love, please pardon the sins of this people, just as you have forgiven them ever since they left Egypt.”

“ Why is the Lord taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and our little ones will be carried off as plunder! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?”Then they plotted among themselves,“ Let’s choose a new leader and go back to Egypt!”

The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever.He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust.Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die.The wind blows, and we are gone— as though we had never been here.But the love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear him. His salvation extends to the children’s childrenof those who are faithful to his covenant, of those who obey his commandments!

What’s more, you haven’t brought us into another land flowing with milk and honey. You haven’t given us a new homeland with fields and vineyards. Are you trying to fool these men? We will not come.”

Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love.Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!

But you offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear you.

Therefore, I will always remind you about these things— even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught.And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live.For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life,so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone.

The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out,“ Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”

I will live among the Israelites and will never abandon my people Israel.”

And the Lord said to Moses,“ How long will these people treat me with contempt? Will they never believe me, even after all the miraculous signs I have done among them?

The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.

“ But our ancestors refused to listen to Moses. They rejected him and wanted to return to Egypt.

Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up?Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up?Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say,‘ Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’”

So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

But Moses said,“ Why are you now disobeying the Lord’s orders to return to the wilderness? It won’t work.

For God said to Moses,“ I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.”

Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven!

“ I called you so often, but you wouldn’t come. I reached out to you, but you paid no attention.

May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us or abandon us.
