“ After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering, they are to come to do their work at the tent of meeting.

“ Make the Levites pure. Give them to me as a wave offering. Then they must come to do their work at the tent of meeting.

And after that the Levites shall go in to serve at the tent of meeting, when you have cleansed them and offered them as a wave offering.

After this, they may go into the Tabernacle to do their work, because you have purified them and presented them as a special offering.

After that the Levites may come to serve at the tent of meeting, once you have ceremonially cleansed them and presented them as a presentation offering.

After that the Levites shall go in to service the tabernacle of meeting. So you shall cleanse them and offer them like a wave offering.

And after that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tent of meeting: and thou shalt cleanse them, and offer them for a wave- offering.

“ After that, the Levites shall go in to do the service of the Tent of Meeting. You shall cleanse them, and offer them as a wave offering.

Aaron then shall present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering from the sons of Israel, so that they may qualify to perform the service of the Lord.

And you shall have the Levites stand before Aaron and his sons so as to present them as a wave offering to the Lord.

from thirty years old and upward, even to fifty years old, everyone who can enter the service of ministry to do work in the tent of meeting.This is the work of the descendants of Kohath in the tent of meeting, concerning the most holy things.“ When the camp sets out, Aaron and his sons shall go in and take down the veil of the curtain, and cover the ark of the testimony with it;and they shall place a covering of fine leather on it, and spread over it a cloth of pure violet, and insert its carrying poles.Over the table of the bread of the Presence they shall also spread a cloth of violet and put on it the dishes, the pans, the sacrificial bowls, and the jugs for the drink offering; and the continual bread shall be on it.And they shall spread over them a cloth of scarlet material, and cover the same with a covering of fine leather, and they shall insert its carrying poles.Then they shall take a violet cloth and cover the lampstand for the light, along with its lamps, its tongs, its trays, and all its oil containers, by which they attend to it;and they shall put it and all its utensils in a covering of fine leather, and put it on the carrying bars.Over the golden altar they shall spread a violet cloth, and cover it with a covering of fine leather, and they shall insert its carrying poles;and they shall take all the utensils of service, with which they serve in the sanctuary, and put them in a violet cloth and cover them with a covering of fine leather, and put them on the carrying bars.Then they shall clean away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth over it.They shall also put on it all its utensils by which they serve in connection with it: the firepans, the forks, shovels, and the basins, all the utensils of the altar; and they shall spread a cover of fine leather over it and insert its carrying poles.When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy objects and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is to set out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them by the poles, so that they will not touch the holy objects and die. These are the things in the tent of meeting that the sons of Kohath are to carry.“ Now the responsibility of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest is the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the continual grain offering, and the anointing oil— the responsibility of all the tabernacle and everything that is in it, with the sanctuary and its furnishings.”Then the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,“ Do not let the tribe of the families of the Kohathites be eliminated from among the Levites.Rather, do this for them so that they will live and not die when they approach the most holy objects: Aaron and his sons shall go in and assign each of them to his work and to his load;but they shall not come in to see the holy objects even for a moment, or they will die.”Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Take a census of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers’ households, by their families;from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old you shall count them: all who can enter to perform service, to do the work in the tent of meeting.This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in carrying:they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the tent of meeting with its covering and the covering of fine leather that is on top of it, and the curtain for the entrance of the tent of meeting,and the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain for the entrance of the gate of the courtyard that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and their ropes and all the equipment for their service; and everything that is to be done by them, they shall perform.All the service of the sons of the Gershonites, that is, all their loads and all their work, shall be performed at the command of Aaron and his sons; and you shall assign to them as a duty all their loads.This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting; and their duties shall be under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.“ As for the sons of Merari, you shall count them by their families, by their fathers’ households;from thirty years old and upward, even to fifty years old, you shall count them, everyone who can enter the service to do the work of the tent of meeting.Now this is the duty of their loads, for all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, and its bases,and the pillars around the courtyard and their bases, their pegs, and their ropes, with all their equipment and with all their service; and you shall assign by names of the men the items that each is to carry.

Moreover, David and the commanders of the army set apart for the service some of the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals; and the number of those who performed this service was:Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah; the sons of Asaph were under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied under the direction of the king.Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six in all, under the direction of their father Jeduthun with the harp, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising the Lord.Of Heman, the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.All these were the sons of Heman the king’s seer to exalt him according to the words of God, for God gave fourteen sons and three daughters to Heman.All of these were under the direction of their father to sing in the house of the Lord, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the direction of the king.Their number who were trained in singing to the Lord, with their relatives, all who were skillful, was 288.They cast lots for their duties, all alike, the small as well as the great, the teacher as well as the pupil.Now the first lot came out for Asaph to Joseph, the second for Gedaliah, he with his relatives and sons were twelve;the third to Zaccur, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the fourth to Izri, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the seventh to Jesharelah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the tenth to Shimei, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the eleventh to Azarel, his sons and his relatives, twelve;the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the thirteenth, Shubael, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the fourteenth, Mattithiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the fifteenth to Jeremoth, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the eighteenth to Hanani, his sons and his relatives, twelve;for the nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons and his relatives, twelve;

and you shall put all these in the hands of Aaron and in the hands of his sons, and shall wave them as a wave offering before the Lord.

The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle westward,and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Gershonites: Eliasaph the son of Lael.Now the duties of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting included the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the curtain for the entrance of the tent of meeting,and the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain for the entrance of the courtyard which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its ropes, according to all the service concerning them.Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, the family of the Izharites, the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.In the counting of every male from a month old and upward, there were 8,600, performing the duties of the sanctuary.The families of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle,and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Kohathite families: Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.Now their duties included the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary with which they minister, the curtain, and all the service concerning them;and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was the head of the leaders of Levi, and he had the supervision of those who performed the duties of the sanctuary.Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari.Their numbered men in the counting of every male from a month old and upward: 6,200.And the leader of the fathers’ households of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They were to camp on the northward side of the tabernacle.Now the appointment of duties of the sons of Merari included the framework of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its bases, all its equipment, and all the service concerning them,and the pillars around the courtyard with their bases, their pegs, and their ropes.

Now when David reached old age, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel with the priests and the Levites.Now the Levites were counted from thirty years old and upward, and their number by head count of men was thirty eight thousand.Of these, twenty four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of the Lord; and six thousand were officers and judges,and four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand were praising the Lord with the instruments which David made for giving praise.David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.Of the Gershonites there were Ladan and Shimei.The sons of Ladan were Jehiel the first, and Zetham and Joel, three.The sons of Shimei were Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers’ households of Ladan.The sons of Shimei were Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.Jahath was the first and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became a father’s household, one group for duty.The sons of Kohath were four in number: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to sanctify him as most holy, he and his sons forever, to burn incense before the Lord, to serve Him and bless in His name forever.But as for Moses, the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer.The son of Gershom was Shebuel the chief.The son of Eliezer was Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.The son of Izhar was Shelomith the chief.The sons of Hebron were Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.The sons of Uzziel were Micah the first and Isshiah the second.The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish.Eleazar died and had no sons, but only daughters; so their relatives, the sons of Kish, took them as wives.The sons of Mushi were three: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth.These were the sons of Levi according to their fathers’ households, the heads of the fathers’ households of those among them who were counted, in the number of names by their head count, doing the work for the service of the house of the Lord, from twenty years old and upward.For David said,“ The Lord God of Israel has given rest to His people, and He dwells in Jerusalem forever.Also, the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its utensils for its service.”For by the last words of David, the sons of Levi were counted from twenty years old and upward.For their office is to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the house of the Lord, in the courtyards and in the chambers, and in the purification of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God,and with the showbread, and the fine flour for a grain offering, and unleavened wafers, or what is baked in the pan or what is well mixed, and all measures of volume and size.They are to stand every morning to thank and to praise the Lord, and likewise at evening,and to offer all burnt offerings to the Lord, on the Sabbaths, the new moons and the appointed festivals, in the number determined by the ordinance concerning them, continually before the Lord.So they are to perform the duties of the tent of meeting, the holy place, and of assisting the sons of Aaron their relatives, for the service of the house of the Lord.

“ Now, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of every firstborn, the firstborn of the womb among the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be Mine.
