Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.

Lord, even before I speak a word, you know all about it.

Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double- edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart.And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

May my words and my thoughts be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my sheltering rock and my redeemer.

You do damage with words, and use your tongue to deceive.You plot against your brother; you slander your own brother.When you did these things, I was silent, so you thought I was exactly like you. But now I will condemn you and state my case against you!

If someone thinks he is religious yet does not bridle his tongue, and so deceives his heart, his religion is futile.

you asked,‘ Who is this who darkens counsel without knowledge?’ But I have declared without understanding things too wonderful for me to know.

“ How long will you speak these things, seeing that the words of your mouth are like a great wind?

Therefore I despise myself, and I repent in dust and ashes!After the LORD had spoken these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite,“ My anger is stirred up against you and your two friends, because you have not spoken about me what is right, as my servant Job has.So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job will intercede for you, and I will respect him, so that I do not deal with you according to your folly, because you have not spoken about me what is right, as my servant Job has.”

At that time I will search through Jerusalem with lamps. I will punish the people who are entrenched in their sin, those who think to themselves,‘ The LORD neither rewards nor punishes.’

“ Who is this who darkens counsel with words without knowledge?

For we all stumble in many ways. If someone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect individual, able to control the entire body as well.And if we put bits into the mouths of horses to get them to obey us, then we guide their entire bodies.Look at ships too: Though they are so large and driven by harsh winds, they are steered by a tiny rudder wherever the pilot’s inclination directs.So too the tongue is a small part of the body, yet it has great pretensions. Think how small a flame sets a huge forest ablaze.And the tongue is a fire! The tongue represents the world of wrongdoing among the parts of our bodies. It pollutes the entire body and sets fire to the course of human existence– and is set on fire by hell.For every kind of animal, bird, reptile, and sea creature is subdued and has been subdued by humankind.But no human being can subdue the tongue; it is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse people made in God’s image.From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. These things should not be so, my brothers and sisters.

The good person brings good things out of his good treasury, and the evil person brings evil things out of his evil treasury.I tell you that on the day of judgment, people will give an account for every worthless word they speak.For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

“ You have criticized me sharply,” says the LORD,“ but you ask,‘ How have we criticized you?’You have said,‘ It is useless to serve God. How have we been helped by keeping his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD who rules over all?So now we consider the arrogant to be happy; indeed, those who practice evil are successful. In fact, those who challenge God escape!’”Then those who respected the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD took notice. A scroll was prepared before him in which were recorded the names of those who respected the LORD and honored his name.

This will happen to them because they have done what is shameful in Israel. They have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken lies while claiming my authority. They have spoken words that I did not command them to speak. I know what they have done. I have been a witness to it,’ says the LORD.”
