If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying.For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.

I want you to understand this mystery, dear brothers and sisters, so that you will not feel proud about yourselves. Some of the people of Israel have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ.

May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus.

Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.

About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked,“ Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?”Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them.Then he said,“ I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven.So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much.

There is more hope for fools than for people who think they are wise.

Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them.Jesus told them,“ In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called‘ friends of the people.’But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.

Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

“ I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said,“ because they are mine to give to anyone I please.I will give it all to you if you will worship me.”Jesus replied,“ The Scriptures say,‘ You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said,“ If you are the Son of God, jump off!For the Scriptures say,‘ He will order his angels to protect and guard you.And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’”

Are you seeking great things for yourself? Don’t do it! I will bring great disaster upon all these people; but I will give you your life as a reward wherever you go. I, the Lord, have spoken!’”

Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise.

Dear brothers and sisters, I close my letter with these last words: Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.

You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.

the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.

I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.

Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said,“ God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours.

“ That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life— whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?

Our dedication to Christ makes us look like fools, but you claim to be so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are so powerful! You are honored, but we are ridiculed.

Now I appeal to Euodia and Syntyche. Please, because you belong to the Lord, settle your disagreement.

Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

But we must hold on to the progress we have already made.

“ God is mighty, but he does not despise anyone! He is mighty in both power and understanding.

“ What is your request?” he asked. She replied,“ In your Kingdom, please let my two sons sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.”But Jesus answered by saying to them,“ You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?”“ Oh yes,” they replied,“ we are able!”Jesus told them,“ You will indeed drink from my bitter cup. But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. My Father has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.”When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.But Jesus called them together and said,“ You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave.For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.

I am saying this to shame you. Isn’t there anyone in all the church who is wise enough to decide these issues?

All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.

Loyalty makes a person attractive. It is better to be poor than dishonest.

If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord— and he will repay you!

At the same time, God’s hand was on the people in the land of Judah, giving them all one heart to obey the orders of the king and his officials, who were following the word of the Lord.

And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants.

The relatives of the poor despise them; how much more will their friends avoid them! Though the poor plead with them, their friends are gone.

Those who mock the poor insult their Maker; those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.

Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp.Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?But you have dishonored the poor.
