I don’t say this to condemn you, since I have already said that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together.

This is why I am writing these things while absent, so that when I am there I may not have to deal harshly with you, in keeping with the authority the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

So even though I wrote to you, it was not because of the one who did wrong, or because of the one who was wronged, but in order that your devotion to us might be made plain to you in the sight of God.

Why? Because I don’t love you? God knows I do!

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.

For I wrote to you with many tears out of an extremely troubled and anguished heart— not to cause you pain, but that you should know the abundant love I have for you.If anyone has caused pain, he has caused pain not so much to me but to some degree— not to exaggerate— to all of you.

I’m not writing this to shame you, but to warn you as my dear children.For you may have countless instructors in Christ, but you don’t have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

I will most gladly spend and be spent for you. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?

We cared so much for you that we were pleased to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.
