Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god.

And Judah has been unfaithful. A hateful thing has been done in Israel and Jerusalem. The Lord loves his temple. But Judah has made it impure. Their men have married women who worship other gods.

Judah has been faithless, and abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the Lord, which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god.

Do not be yoked together with those who do not believe. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?What agreement does Christ have with Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?And what agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God, as God said: I will dwell and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.Therefore, come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord; do not touch any unclean thing, and I will welcome you.And I will be a Father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.

After these things had been done, the leaders approached me and said,“ The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the surrounding peoples whose detestable practices are like those of the Canaanites, Hethites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.Indeed, the Israelite men have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed has become mixed with the surrounding peoples. The leaders and officials have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness!”

and lends at interest or for profit, will he live? He will not live! Since he has committed all these detestable acts, he will certainly die. His death will be his own fault.

I brought you to a fertile land to eat its fruit and bounty, but after you entered, you defiled my land; you made my inheritance detestable.The priests quit asking,“ Where is the LORD?” The experts in the law no longer knew me, and the rulers rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal and followed useless idols.

They aligned themselves with Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods.

The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.

Then do you come and stand before me in this house that bears my name and say,“ We are rescued, so we can continue doing all these detestable acts”?

Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an Elamite, responded to Ezra,“ We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the surrounding peoples, but there is still hope for Israel in spite of this.

You must not intermarry with them, and you must not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,because they will turn your sons away from me to worship other gods. Then the LORD’s anger will burn against you, and he will swiftly destroy you.Instead, this is what you are to do to them: tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their carved images.For you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be his own possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.

Now if you will carefully listen to me and keep my covenant, you will be my own possession out of all the peoples, although the whole earth is mine,and you will be my kingdom of priests and my holy nation.’ These are the words that you are to say to the Israelites.”

In those days I also saw Jews who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples but could not speak Hebrew.I rebuked them, cursed them, beat some of their men, and pulled out their hair. I forced them to take an oath before God and said,“ You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or yourselves!Didn’t King Solomon of Israel sin in matters like this? There was not a king like him among many nations. He was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel, yet foreign women drew him into sin.Why then should we hear about you doing all this terrible evil and acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?”Even one of the sons of Jehoiada, son of the high priest Eliashib, had become a son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. So I drove him away from me.Remember them, my God, for defiling the priesthood as well as the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.

So do not give your daughters to their sons in marriage or take their daughters for your sons. Never pursue their welfare or prosperity, so that you will be strong, eat the good things of the land, and leave it as an inheritance to your sons forever.”

They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded thembut mingled with the nations and adopted their ways.They served their idols, which became a snare to them.They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.They shed innocent blood— the blood of their sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; so the land became polluted with blood.They defiled themselves by their actions and prostituted themselves by their deeds.

One man within you commits a detestable act with his neighbor’s wife; another defiles his daughter-in-law with depravity; and yet another violates his sister, his father’s daughter.

But the cowards, faithless, detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars— their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

I thought,‘ After she has done all these things, she will return to me.’ But she didn’t return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it.I observed that it was because unfaithful Israel had committed adultery that I had sent her away and had given her a certificate of divorce. Nevertheless, her treacherous sister Judah was not afraid but also went and prostituted herself.Indifferent to her prostitution, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees.

There is none like the God of Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to your aid, the clouds in his majesty.The God of old is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He drives out the enemy before you and commands,“ Destroy!”So Israel dwells securely; Jacob lives untroubled in a land of grain and new wine; even his skies drip with dew.How happy you are, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD? He is the shield that protects you, the sword you boast in. Your enemies will cringe before you, and you will tread on their backs.

“ Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices, for the nations I am driving out before you have defiled themselves by all these things.The land has become defiled, so I am punishing it for its iniquity, and the land will vomit out its inhabitants.But you are to keep my statutes and ordinances. You must not commit any of these detestable acts— not the native or the alien who resides among you.For the people who were in the land prior to you have committed all these detestable acts, and the land has become defiled.If you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it has vomited out the nations that were before you.Any person who does any of these detestable practices is to be cut off from his people.You must keep my instruction to not do any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them; I am the LORD your God.”

King Solomon loved many foreign women in addition to Pharaoh’s daughter: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite womenfrom the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites,“ You must not intermarry with them, and they must not intermarry with you, because they will turn your heart away to follow their gods.” To these women Solomon was deeply attached in love.He had seven hundred wives who were princesses and three hundred who were concubines, and they turned his heart away.When Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away to follow other gods. He was not wholeheartedly devoted to the LORD his God, as his father David had been.Solomon followed Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom, the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites.Solomon did what was evil in the LORD’s sight, and unlike his father David, he did not remain loyal to the LORD.At that time, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the abhorrent idol of Moab, and for Milcom, the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites, on the hill across from Jerusalem.He did the same for all his foreign wives, who were burning incense and offering sacrifices to their gods.

But they, like Adam, have violated the covenant; there they have betrayed me.

for you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. The LORD has chosen you to be his own possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.

You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be mine.

I planted you, a choice vine from the very best seed. How then could you turn into a degenerate, foreign vine?Even if you wash with lye and use a great amount of bleach, the stain of your iniquity is still in front of me. This is the Lord GOD’s declaration.

Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of his harvest. All who ate of it found themselves guilty; disaster came on them.” This is the LORD’s declaration.

When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them,the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any they chose as wives for themselves.
