如果主不縮短災期，恐怕沒有人能活命，但為了祂所揀選的子民，祂已經縮短災期。

若不是主减少那日子，凡有血气的，总没有一个得救的；只是为主的选民，他将那日子减少了。

耶和華說：「人發現一串葡萄尚可釀造新酒時，一定會說，『不要毀壞它，裡面還有好葡萄。』同樣，因我僕人的緣故，我也不會把他們全部毀滅。「我必使雅各的後裔興起，使猶大人興起，繼承我的群山。我揀選的子民必擁有那片土地，我的僕人必在那裡安居。

如果不縮短那段時期，恐怕沒有一人能活命。但上帝必為祂選民的緣故，而縮短那災期。

就福音而論，他們成為上帝的仇敵是為了使你們得到福音；就上帝的揀選而論，因為他們祖先的緣故，他們仍是上帝所愛的。因為上帝絕不會收回祂的恩賜和呼召。你們從前不順服上帝，然而因為他們的不順服，你們現在反蒙了憐憫。同樣，他們現在不順服是為了使你們蒙憐憫，好使他們也蒙憐憫。因為上帝把世人都歸在不順服之列，是為了要憐憫世人。

地上三分之二的人必遭剷除、毀滅，只剩下三分之一的人存活。這是耶和華說的。我必使這三分之一的人受到火一般的考驗；我必像熬煉銀子一樣熬煉他們，像試煉金子一樣試煉他們。他們必呼求我的名，我必回應他們。我必說，『這是我的子民。』他們必說，『耶和華是我們的上帝。』」

即使境內只剩下十分之一的人，也必被消滅。然而，就像砍掉松樹和橡樹後必留下樹墩，這地方必有聖潔的苗裔存留下來。」

當然，如果以色列人不再頑固不信，必會重新被接上去，因為上帝能把他們重新接上。你這從野生的橄欖樹上砍下來的枝子，尚且可以違反自然，被接到好橄欖樹上，何況原來的枝子被接回到原來的樹上呢？

現在的情況也是一樣，上帝按照揀選的恩典留下了少數人。既然說是出於恩典，就不再基於行為，不然恩典就不再是恩典了。這該怎麼說呢？以色列人努力追求，卻一無所得，只有蒙揀選的人得到了，其他的人都變得頑固不化。

若不是萬軍之耶和華讓我們一些人存活，我們早就像所多瑪和蛾摩拉一樣滅亡了。
